Isengard was the solo-project started in 1989 by Fenriz - one the key driving forces behind Norwegian legends Darkthrone - because he had many musical ideas to explore that didn't strictly fit in with the style and music of Darkthrone. Under the Isengard moniker, Fenriz released 2 albums, ‘Vinterskugge’ and ‘Høstmørke’.  

‘Vinterskugge’ consists of three separate recordings made between 1989 and 1993, and contains a whole multitude of styles, including doom, rock, folk, death, black, and viking metal. ‘Vinterskugge’ also demonstrated Fenriz’s breadth of vocal styles, lending an epic edge to many of the tracks. 

  The album contains three chapters. The first, ‘Vanderen’, features the most recent tracks, from 1993. The second part comprises of ‘Spectres Over Gorgoroth’, an early Isengard recording from 1989. While chapter three features tracks from 1991, called ‘Horizons’.   This new edition of ‘Vinterskugge’ includes a bonus commentary disc where Fenriz describes his recollections of the period - both of the composition of the tracks and the recordings - in an invaluable insight into this classic release, as the music plays in the background. This edition also features additional booklet content.

Isengard - Vinterskugge (from the Vinterskugge commentary disc)

Isengard is a death metal project which evolved into a large mix of styles, incorporating elements of doom, rock, death, black metal and folk. 
Hostmorke, meaning Autumn Darkness, was the second Isengard album, (even though the debut, 'Vinterskugge' is a collection of sorts). It was released in 1995 and featured a continuation of Norwegian folk elements mixed with some doom, with all instruments once again performed by Fenriz himself, as well as the now-trademark vocal delivery.

The latter part of the album also features a couple of black metal tracks which explore territory a bit more in line with Darkthrone, particularly the track 'Total Death'. Hostmorke is also notable for featuring a couple of small guest appearances fromAldrahn (ex-DHG) &amp; Vicotnik (DHG). 

This track is taken from the 2CD reissued edition of Hostmorke, which contains a special commentary disc conducted by Fenriz and reflecting on the recording process, as well as an insight into the time of the recording.
