My Favourite Friends Podcast #31 Pazkal

A small collection of music produced by or in association with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples. Lew and myself put this mix together in mid 2015 for our radio show on the community broadcaster 3RRR 102.7fm. 

We're hardly in a position to make commentary on the vastly diverse musical cultures that exist across the cities, towns and communities in Australia, but this seemed like a simple way to provide an alternative to the JJJ countdown. We encourage you to have a look and listen for yourself - you'll fine everything from desert reggae to 90s house, and stomping rock. 

Thanks and gratitude to all the musicians involved in these projects, both living and deceased; to C.A.A.M.A. for releasing almost half the songs on this mix, Incite Youth Arts (http://redsandculture.com/) for their excellent compilations, and resources like IndigiTube (http://www.indigitube.com.au/) for a chance to hear these fantastic artists. Thanks to Peter Mumme for providing a deeper understanding of the Waak Waak Jungi project (for which there is a reissue in development). 

The refusal to celebrate Australia Day is part of an ongoing fight for the recognition of first nations people's rights. If nothing else, we hope this mix can serves as an alternative soundtrack for a weekend that otherwise resounds with a the cannons, fireworks and bells of Australia's colonial history. If you are able bodied and free, I encourage you to attend one of the many rallys that will be taking place on the 26th January.

My sets often reflect my own unique thoughts and feelings and gave the listener a deeper look into who i am and what moves me. I see myself as a traveler, a philosopher as a DJ in that i have a deep sense into sounds and in that way I try to make my thoughts and feelings audible. so my selection is a highly curated combination of unique tracks that are timeless and that overcome the boundaries of genre, country, or context. my thoughts to that mix are: »We are one species. We are star stuff harvesting star light. Our lives, our past and our future are tied to the sun, the moon and the stars. Rolandson, a self-described “child of the Baltic Sea” whose roots lie in Sweden/Uppsala and Rostock, currently lives in a quiet city called Halle an der Saale. The amiable 38-year old’s heart beats for so many beautiful things he has discovered in his travels that he sees himself as a traveller who “transforms his thoughts and feelings into pictures, and transforms those pictures into mixtapes”. His sets often reflect his own unique thoughts and feelings and give the listener a deeper look into who he is and what moves him. To quote a wise man: “It is the work of he whose intention was not to impress, but to be true, that will persist.” (Jean Cocteau)

Rolandson has been playing music for 20 years now and has been enchanting his listeners with unbelievable sets that he often gets lost in himself.
His sound transcends the boundaries of genre or style - a characteristic that applies to him not only musically but also personally: he avoids clichés and instead strives for originality and musical diversity.

When he’s not behind the decks, he’s the driving force behind his netlabel and podcast series “Seasidetrip”, which he started in 2012 after recording a mix at sea. Since the first Seasidetrip mix, many artists have have interpreted their love and longing for the sea in their own mixes, contributing to the growth of this wonderful project which has not only touched the hearts of its listeners, but also led to many friendships and inspiring collaborations with other artists along the way.

Rolandson invites you to join him in making the world a bit more colourful, a bit more diverse and saturated with unique music.

Originating from Colombia Sano was born with rhythm in his soul. Now based in Barcelona he has become a prevalent artist in his own right having found his way into the heart of the Comeme family and now most recently Public Possession. His sound sees him integrate elements of latin music within modern day electronics in an exciting fashion. As a result his presence has continued to grow, travelling regularly this year has seen him play widely across South America and Europe. 

The theme of his mix for us sees him explore his own heritage in great depth as he pays tribute to Latino producers across the globe. He explains in his interview below:
