Tobi's Fresh Net Faves 2022

Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 5th September: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch457

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Scooters is the second single from the project, and the song explores relationships, the passing of time and the arrival of winter. The self-produced song blends mellow hip-hop & melodic R&B, and it also features Bristol-based artist Slowe, who has received radio support on BBC Radio 1.

Written on NYE 2020, To Your Eyes is stripped right back to just Benji and his guitar. About the song, Benji says “I find this time of year truly magical, a time to slow down and take stock, to hibernate, away from the busyness of the world, the anxiety of social media. I’ve had a few occasions where songs will come to me around New Years Eve, but this one stuck and I’m very fond of it. It’s about shaking off my jaded world view (briefly), appreciating what I have, and choosing, or at least intending to choose love, kindness, and hope”

To Your Eyes (out NYD 2023) is the second single from debut album Songs to Make You Happy, coming January 20th 2023 on Pear O’ Legs Records.

Welsh singer and songwriter Benji Tranter returns with his debut album Songs to Make You Happy. With a lo-fi, DIY ethos, unembellished guitars and vocals deliver a charming, sometimes chaotic, collection of vignettes; diary entries, polaroid snapshots, throwaway poems and short stories. The influence of US songwriters like Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst and Daniel Johnston is clear throughout, with occasional elements from Scott Walker, Nick Drake, and the care-free naivety of Jonathan Richman.

Out on the January 20, 2023 on Pear O’Legs Records.
The first single from the album, 'Satellite' is out now.
