Toma Kami returns to Livity Sound for a third EP of provocative, experimental club gear. At the helm of his own Man Band label the French producer continues to explore a hybridised style which favours fractured beats, playful samples and occasional psychedelic flourishes.

Compared to the busier sound of previous releases, minimalism informs Toma’s approach on LIVITY053 as he sits his crunchy drums and weighty low-end in a tangibly spacious mix on ‘Amapicante’. Even within a stripped-down context, his unique approach shines through as ‘Later To The Bone’ progressively ramps up in scratched and scuffed sonic interference and ‘Mzecal’ trips over its own fragmented found-sound drum formations.

Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

“Chop chop chop” – as the distant sound of a rhythmic reckoning grows closer and closer, we as rave disciples in our purest form can be reminded of both the beginning of this story, as well as its current flourishing state. We recall that past scripture speaks of the birth of our beloved helicopter, which contained a sacred capsule from the future (or possibly aliens). While this capsule exists as physical, musical, fundamental proof of the durability of our “FAST NOT HARD” belief system, we know that all systems must morph into new forms and individualized movements.

With this in mind, we praise the emergence of the HOVER CAPSULE – the first of many sub-discs that expand upon the fast-not-hard gospel through a divinely anointed group of master apostles, each with their own distinctly resonant vision of musical ascendance and serenity. On the A side, three separate offerings point to an originalist form of heli-dogma (chop, chop, chop, indeed!), led by first chosen FAW matriarch Carré and her elected counterpart, the legendary phonic guru Addison Groove. Joining them in spreading this up-tempo vision of sonic prayer are rising duo Baalti, and London underground priest Adam Curtain, each delivering a firm yet fluttery hymn of audible togetherness. On the B, the deeper potential of higher tempos displays in its purest and most tangible form. While Ruby May Moon & Emanuel showcase an offering chock full of emotional, poetic intensity, Introspekt churns and chops it up a notch, infusing dissonance with her signature two-step religiosity. Data Plan & 11:68PM round things out, en(capsule)ating the true musical connotation of an ethos that continues to expand and spread – well, hover.
