It’s another Monday, and today the German-Irish duo @lenzmusikofficial are right on time with the thirty-first installment of Moonlight Mixtapes. Since joining forces during the pandemic era, Hamburg/Belfast-based DJ Joma and German vocalist and songwriter Moon Aton have crafted a capable resume, including a string of successful releases on labels we love—such as @beadultmusic, @wheretheshadowends, @equilibrio_records, and @nordicvoyage—along with expanding the sound of the scene with their weekly ‘Night Whisper’ podcast.

This week, they open with a dreamy Radiohead remake by Stereo Underground before charting a path on the smooth and heady side of things. Deep tweaks to traditional instrument sounds and a knack for creating emotional depth keep this seamlessly-crafted sonic tapestry intriguing from start to finish. The track selection feels tailored to beautiful organic synth work, including tracks from the likes of @elliot_moriarty, @leavinglaurel, and our own Residents @cielo_us and @pinkowitz.

As the mood evolves, so does the energy. In the second half, Lenz brings us a spirited, club-ready vibe complete with funk-driven bass lines layered under early-aughts progressive and ‘80s electro nostalgia. A wistful vocal finish ties up an 80-minute journey through all the moods a mind can offer—this one’s versatile enough to cover all the bases.

I'm just a small-town Canadian boy who loves music.

I started listening to electronic back in 2000 after my brother lent me some CDs for the summer from Sasha & Digweed, Moby, and Orbital. I got into the dance scene shortly after and found a strong connection to trance with DJs like Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, and Ferry Corsten, while making some incredible friendships along the way. 

My first attempts at any kind of mixing were late-night vinyl sessions with my roommate listening to some classic trance and house and eventually putting together a simple set-up on my Mac to make some mixes for my commute. I’ve always liked the idea of being able to create a sort of soundtrack to my day-to-day and admire my friends who’ve made a career out of it as they bring such a positive impact to the lives of so many. 

I’ve spent the better part of my adult life abroad - first in China and now in Italy - and music has always been something that keeps me grounded and focused.
