“Part of the Wildlife” is the second explosive single release from East London alt-rock band Emma and the Fragments, from their upcoming EP Smile ‘Til It Hurts.

“Part of the Wildlife” is the second single from female-fronted indie rock band Emma and the Fragments, ahead of their sophomore EP Smile ‘Til It Hurts, which is scheduled for a 2021 release. Unapologetically feisty, “Part of the Wildlife” opens with a rough and tumble riff courtesy of lead guitarist Donn, dripping with distortion and driving the track forward with an uncompromising momentum. The punch of the hook is lent even more power by drummer Jon, whose blasting heavy hits give the listener a taste of the raw animalistic energy yet to come. 

The song takes on the Regina George’s of the world, dealing with themes of bullying and haters in a tongue-in-cheek way. The track is haunted throughout by the image of a green-eyed monster, alluding to the fact that most bullies are, deep down, motivated by their own jealousy and insecurity. Unfortunately for them, the bullies find themselves transformed from goddesses at the top of the food chain, to Frankenstein-esque monsters, completely taken over by their envious impulses and cruelty. “Part of the Wildlife” asks: can these bullies ever be redeemed? 

The music video for “Part of the Wildlife” forces you to see the world through a bully’s eyes, as a predator stalking through the jungle. As you prowl through the undergrowth, the setting becomes alive with threats: glowing eyes that never avert their gaze, and other ferocious creatures waiting in the wings to usurp you. We are shown the desperation and paranoia of the bully, who feels constantly scrutinised and hounded, always on the verge of having their power taken away.

“Part of the Wildlife” blends unbridled punk energy with indie and alt-rock elements, to create a playful clap back to the haters of the world. Upbeat and empowering, Emma’s snarling vocal delivery balances sweetness and sass, taking the classic Riot Grrrl venom and adding polished production to create an irresistible sing-along sound. Coming in at just under three minutes, “Part of the Wildlife” is as razor-sharp as the teeth of its monstrous bully character, and is just as capable of going in for the kill.
