Story
The Spirit of the River
On the banks of the great Zambezi, where the water sings and the stars are reflected like fish of light, lived the Tonga people. Every afternoon, the elders gathered the children to tell stories that were not written in any book, but rather in the memory of the river.

They say that in ancient times, the Zambezi was not just a river: it was a breathing spirit. Its voice could be heard in the murmur of the currents, and its eyes shone in the scales of the silver fish.

One day, the Spirit of the River decided to test the kindness of the animals that lived along its banks. It appeared as a blue mist and asked:

"Who will protect my waters when men forget to respect them?"

The hippopotamus, strong and silent, replied:

"I will remain in your waters, guarding your secrets beneath my thick skin."

The crocodile, with a stony smile, said:

"I will watch over your banks, so that no one forgets your power." The tigerfish, swift as lightning, added:

“I will carry your strength in my leaps, remembering that life is movement.”

But it was the kingfisher, small and bright, who spoke humbly:

“I will sing every dawn over your waters, so that humankind may remember that the river is sacred.”

The Spirit of the River smiled. It was not strength or fear that it valued most, but memory and song. Since then, the Tonga say that when the kingfisher lands on the Zambezi, the river listens and rejoices, because someone still remembers its spirit.
