Leap of Faith is the core duet of the Leap of Faith Orchestra (LOFO) comprised of PEK on clarinets, saxophones, clarinets & flutes, and Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonic & voice.  The ensemble is based in Boston and dates back to the early 90s.  We utilize a huge arsenal of additional Evil Clown instruments to improvise long works featuring transformations across highly varied sonorities.   At times, the core unit has been a trio or even a quartet.  The longest running core unit was comprised of PEK, Glynis and drummer Yuri Zbitnov, who played for the last couple of years of the Archival Period and the first 5 years of the reboot starting in 2015.  The ensemble has always been highly modular, and our many recordings (well over 100) feature the core unit in dozens of configurations with a huge list of guests and occasionally as only the core unit with no guests.  Currently, the core unit is the duet of PEK and Lomon and we are regularly presenting LIVESTREAMs to YouTube from Evil Clown Headquarters with other guest performers.

Leap of Faith sessions come in a variety of flavors – sometimes the ensemble is very large, sometimes just a duet, sometimes with lots of strings, sometimes with lots of horns, sometimes with lots of percussion, and sometimes with more balanced instrumental resources.  Nowadays, the Evil Clown Roster has about 50 members, so most of the sessions for most of the ensembles run to the larger size…  Evil Clown Headquarters can fit 8 players when we have drums and a few more when we do not.  Most of the contemporary sets at ECH have between 6 and 8 performers.

Disentangling the Spin was performed by chamber quartet.  Glynis and me with John Fugarino (brass) and Cliff White (saxophones).  Glynis, John and I go back to the very early 90s when we played together in the Masashi Harada Sextet and some other settings.  When that band stopped, Glynis and I formed Leap of Faith, but we lost track of John until I ran into him again on facebook in 2022.  Since then John has been one of our most hard-core regulars, appearing on several sessions per month on average.   Cliff is a relative newbie who first performed at one of the recent Brattleboro VT performances of Turbulence Orchestra & Sub-Units.  He lives in western MA, but has made the trek east to Boston several times for Evil Clown Headquarters for LIVESTREAM performances.

A recurring format at Evil Clown Headquarters is PEK and Glynis with two extra horns, bass and drums. For Probabilistic Notions our horn player guests are brass players John Fugarino and Bob Moores. Our most regular bassist Scott Samenfeld is joined by special guest Jared Seabrook at the drum set for an outstanding rhythm section. Jared is a great drummer who has appeared on 4 previous Leap of Faith sets, 2 Turbulence sets and 1 Neurodivergent performance. He is one of our great players who is busy, but loves playing at Evil Clown, so he is very welcome when he is occasionally able to make it.  

Bob and John are both hard core regulars at Evil Clown. Bob has been a regular for the entire Contemporary Period starting in 2015 and has over 100 appearances on performances by most of the Evil Clown Ensembles. John played with Glynis and me in the Masashi Harada Sextet in the early 90s, and then we lost track of him until 2022 when we reconnected on Facebook. Since then, he has been one of our most frequent contributors, appearing on nearly 60 albums in 3 ½ years.

Anyway, a sextet ensemble with excellent players with such deep connections and who are all veterans of Evil Clown Headquarters performances is a blueprint for an excellent result. All of us did some or a lot of doubling on the auxiliary instruments in the space, so the improvisation proceeded through a long series of distinct sonorities over the duration. Of course, this is the goal of broad palette improvisation and Probabilistic Notions is a superbly executed example.

String Theory is the extended string section of the Leap of Faith Orchestra, and the current incarnation of this early period Leap of Faith ensemble.  As well as being the string section of the orchestra, String Theory performs and records independently.  Since we rebooted the Leap of Faith project in 2015, we have released 10 albums of string and woodwind improvisations…

For this session we have Glynis and myself plus LOFO regulars Silvain Castellano on bass, Grant Beale on guitar and Matt Schutchfield, along with newcomer Lucasz Pavlikovsky on cello.  I brought a bunch of the wood and metal percussion for the auxiliary instruments and we did a very nice CD length improvisation!!

For this session we have Glynis and myself plus LOFO regulars Albey onBass on electric bass, Silvain Castellano on double bass, Grant Beale on guitar and relative newcomers Adrienne Schoenfeld on double bass and Lucasz Pavlikovsky on cello. This ensemble is a very low string quartet with electric bass & guitar and my woodwinds! String players are in high demand and generally pretty busy, so we tend to do fewer String Theory shows and sessions than other Evil Clown ensembles and we sometimes miss some of our great players like Mimi Rabson due to packed schedules… However, this time the schedules were kind to us and we jammed about as many players (7) as we can fit into Outpost 186… I love larger improvisation units with many instruments in the same timbre/sonority sets - These kind of units are capable of making extraordinary textures…

All of the sub-unit ensembles which feed the Leap of Faith Orchestra are really benefiting from our heavy schedule over the last four years. These players really listen and integrate their ideas into a natural sequence of transformations through diverse sonorities… Stay tuned for more String Theory in the future…

For this set, Glynis and I are joined by one of our favorite violinists, Elinor Speirs, and pianist Eric Zinman from Glynis’ other trio New Language Collaborative (NLC).  Elinor first did a Leap of Faith session last summer just before joining the LOFO performance of Cosmological Horizons at Killian Hall MIT in July of 2018.  She has finished her DMA at New England Conservatory and now splits her time between New York and Boston.  Despite her crazy travel schedule, she has managed to make time for more Leap of Faith sets recorded at Evil Clown Headquarters and now this String Theory performance at Outpost 186.

Eric, Glynis and I all go way back, since Eric was on the Boston Free Music scene when I arrived in 1989, and we played back then.  During the long Leap of Faith hiatus, Eric played a great deal with Glynis and the brilliant drummer Syd Smart in NLC.  In more recent times. Eric has been the regular pianist for the Leap of Faith Orchestra and a frequent guest in smaller Leap of Faith ensembles, Metal Chaos Ensemble, and String Theory.

This performance is a very interesting development in this history, combining long prior history with Eric and recent small format Leap of Faith performances with Elinor.  One of the main characteristics of String Theory compared to Leap of Faith is the absence of a drummer.  We love Yuri’s playing and there are many wonderful performances by LOF with additional strings, but occasionally we do the strings without drum set.  String Theory, as a result, has a much more chamber music vibe than Evil Clown albums by the other bands.  Although Yuri is absent, there is still percussion, just no drum set; I brought some gongs and a couple bags of wood and metal instruments and Eric included several cymbals in his piano set up, and also played the piano interior with mallets…
