Mumbai based Paloma Monnappa and Varun Patra are two young DJs unafraid to push the ever extending boundaries of Indian clubland. Their live sets, confirm this enthusiastic and finely crafted union, in which it seems obvious that the two artists naturally complement each others ideas.

From moody ambiences, bewitching loops and hybrid beats to sophisticated soulful rhythms, Algorhythm exhibits a rich pallet of atmospheres and attitudes with a smart and creative approach.

Wild City #49, showcases exactly this. In a solid mix of old and new, it kicks off with the sounds of producer of the moment, Flume, running through tracks from the likes of SBTRKT, Arkist, Maribou State and Cashmere Cat. Starting at a head nodding tempo before picking up the pace as the mix progresses, it also throws in electro swing influences and exhibits a much apparent love for remixes and bootlegs.

Also the co-creators of FLUX, one of Mumbai's only genre defying clubnights and music discovery blogs, it's obvious from the get go, that these two are passionate about pushing forward new music. Our kind of people.

We don't ever want to be classified or corned into one style of music, because we enjoy experimenting and bringing in new influences, while at the same time trying to somewhat invent our own (...) ***Black Horse Pike is the first single from Vorhees' forthcoming "Black Horse Pike" EP, out on February 24th, 2017***

Black Horse Pike represents an unintentionally chronological contemplation. Across a five-track suite, Vorhees explores memories of teenage meanderings in New Jersey’s suburban doldrums, the scars and artifacts of relationships with intimates and religion, and the impossible waking (un)reality of her insomniac tendencies throughout the world in ever changing hotel rooms and tour bus bunks.

The title track and opening song on Black Horse Pike sets the record’s compositional tone. Eulogizing a late night drive to a secluded section of suburbia, Dana conjures memories of a place where two nascent lovers could share a kiss and friends could travel without cause. Languid textures billow from her machines in a bed of harmonic ambience, creating a haze through which infinite guitar notes sear and echoed vocals float. “Souvenir” follows these forms with an expansive bass tone, as if to represent the heaviness of shedding failed promises of past lovers and religious faith, beautifying and destroying nostalgia in unison.

“In the church of texture, the disintegration of signal is God.” Vorhees’s beautiful destruction/deconstruction of memory and sound knows no better representatives than her two ambient passages on Black Horse Pike, “SPL” and “Millie’s Pinky”. The former’s pillow of guitar manipulation recalls Brian Eno’s Apollo in creating an otherworldly love song to the infinite and electrical charge of sonic forces. Dana’s vocals lead the hymn, her words providing somnolent percussion through poetic technique (“sound pushes air, pressure push and shoves”) as a gossamer voice captivates and haunts in the manner of her subjects. “Millie’s Pinky”, inspired by a late-night viewing of Robert Altman's "3 Women", stretches the possibilities of processed breath and string from organic origins to interstellar soundscapes with snare manipulations by Greg Fox. The finale of Black Horse Pike represents the ellipsis in a diary’s last page before starting anew - the awareness of time passed and still to occur - three dots for nine minutes of soundtracking an insomniac’s forever fatigue, waking dreams, and bliss upon sleep.

Black Horse Pike was written, recorded and produced by Dana Wachs in her Brooklyn home between touring with Belle & Sebastian and Deerhunter. During this time, Dana participated in parts II and III of a performance art piece titled Rural Violence, directed by Brandon Stousy, with part II presented by Matthew Barney. In conjunction, she collaborated with George Clarke of Deafheaven, forming the new duo Wachs & Clarke, for the 20 minute accompanying music piece RVIII: Invocation, (with all proceeds going to the Matthew Shepard Foundation). The artwork for Black Horse Pike features an illustration by Dana’s mother, Nancy Alter, and design by Tran Huynh.

Styles Upon Styles will release the EP on February 24, 2017 in limited edition vinyl and limitless edition digital.

Where their widely acclaimed 'Bird Sound Power' primer compilation, issued on DDS in 2016, brought the rest of the world up to speed with the music produced between late ‘00s and 2015, their first album now brings a 2020 sound into sharp, technoid focus thru a baker’s dozen steely, heat-seeking riddims galvanised with clinical electronics and a Midas Touch approach to sampling.

Multi-award winning experimental pop auteur, Sasha Perera aka Perera Elsewhere is a producer, musician, songwriter and DJ who has garnered critical acclaim from Pitchfork, NPR, BBC, FADER, Vogue, KCRW and many more. Her use of technology to create and to experiment with her voice, lyrics, trumpet, percussive beats, bass frequencies, sound design and existential ideas all led to what fans and press initially coined the ‘Doom-Folk’ sound of the Perera Elsewhere project. She found a home on Los Angeles based label Friends of Friends where she has released 3 albums that have seen her sonic imprint graciously evolve. Her music evokes a hybrid of comparisons such as Mica Levi, Dean Blunt, Jon Hassell and Massive Attack.
Journeys have punctuated Perera Elsewhere’s life perspective and career, taking her from London’s vibrant club scene to Berlin’s bass experimentalist underground. All of which developed her shapeshifting approach to music. Elsewhere, but always rooted. No matter where Perera has found herself musically–from live shows & DJ sets at institutions such as Berghain, the Guggenheim, the Hamburg Philharmonic, Sonar Festival and Boiler Room.
Her music has been licensed for Ava Du Vernay’s ‘Queen Sugar’ series, by Oscar winning director Paolo Sorrentino for his ‘Loro’ film and recently by Apple for the promotional launch of their faster than ever M2 chip.
A true multi-hyphenate, Perera’s open and autodidact technique is also highlighted by a long list of side releases, collaborations as well as bespoke compositions for moving image, theatre and audio-visual installations for leading global institutions such as Bass Museum Miami (2022 and ZKM in Karlsruhe (2024). She produced 4 songs for German icon Nina Hagen’s recent album (2023).
Perera Elsewhere won ‘Best Act ’at the VIA awards 2022, the only independent award for musical innovation in Germany. She also won Sony Music Germany’s ‘Female Producer Award’ in 2024.
Perera’s published works have led to invitations by renowned institutions such as Ableton, Native Instruments, Yale or Berlin’s University of Arts and the award- winning Errrormusic programme to share her creative knowledge via studio sessions, workshops, teaching, and mentoring.   Sasha has also worked with the British Council and Goethe Institute as an artist and co-curator or mentor on music projects and music-tech education initiatives across Asia and Africa .  She recently composed the sound for a Kampnagel dance/ theatre production titled' Reparation Nation.'  Perera Elsewhere is clearly at home in many places.
