After Mickey Kojak's debut record, "Feel My Pain" featuring the amazing vox of Tazzy blew up, we figured it was like when the Italians discovered pasta. They didn't stop at spaghetti, and along came other classics like penne and rigatoni. INTERVIEW:

1.  You are originally from Virginia where you came up in the punk/hardcore scene. From there, what drew you into electronic music?

Funny you should bring that up! The tail-end of the podcast sort of goes back in time and explains that in reverse. If the listener sticks around for the last ten minutes or so you’ll see what I mean: Housey Industrial to Industrialy Hardcore to one of my early high-school Punk anthems. 
	Even before I got into Punk I was interested in Kraftwerk, Human League, Missing Persons and lots of that early 80’s synth music which actually led me to Punk/Hardcore. Around that same time I started listening to early Hip Hop as well. The radio stations in Virginia that played Hip Hop also played club music late at night, so I was hearing Chicago House, Hip House, Acid and stuff like that. A friend turned me on to Skinny Puppy which seemed to be a combination of all these things I liked—and I sought out more music in that vein. Certain groups like On-U Sound System bridged the gap between Industrial music and House—so really all of these genres are in some way connected for me. I saw a lot of similarities in the Techno/Electronic music scene to the Punk/HC scene in that they were both very Do-It-Yourself and done on their own terms at the time (xerox zines / vinyl / independent distribution / etc). 


2.  You've maintained a pretty prolific output for the last, nearly, 2 decades.  What is some of the art, music, etc. that keeps you motivated today?

Well, my output has definitely slowed down over the years but I am constantly finding inspiration in things new and old. 
	Art-wise I am big fan of the Dada movement. It’s really had such an impact on graphic design, activism, and even the art of sampling and sound collage. Hannah Hoch, Kurt Schwitters, and John Heartfield are all favorites who motivate my art as well as music. 
	Music wise I find motivation in lots of different genres: Dub, Industrial, House, Doom, Funk, Techno, Black Metal, Hardcore, Experimental, Hip Hop, Blues... Whatever.
Robert Hood, Wolves In The Throne Room, Burial Hex, Soft Metals, King Tubby, Jimi Hendrix, Deepchild, Negura Bunget, and Cabaret Voltaire are all equally inspiring to me. What I find most interesting is when artists say fuck it to conventions and blur the lines between genres or push the boundaries a bit further. 
	What is happening in the world and in my life (both good and bad) have always fueled the creativity as well. 



3.  There have been some great releases and remixes from you recently on labels like Minus, AmAm, Thoughtless, etc.. What do you have coming up in the pipeline?

Thanks! I have a few remixes coming up. I just did a couple for fellow Portlander JAK which will be released on Trapez this year. I am really excited for JAK’s release and have been a long time fan of that label. Also, remixes for Jay Zoney and the UK synth duo Rescue A Family are coming. Other than that, I’ve been working on a project that is more experimental, as well as getting back to some of my own techno stuff. 


4.  Any chance of future Barada/Bryan Zentz live sets, or possibly a resurrection of Disruptor?

Oh man... It’s been almost a decade since I’ve done one of those. I’m not even sure of how I would go about doing it these days as my setup and way of making music has changed so much. It does cross my mind pretty often though... maybe one of these days (I think I said that last time) : P
	About Disruptor: I think that label will probably continue resting in peace in the Techno label graveyard. The goal with that was to fuse different influences: mainly Dub music with Techno but in a different way than say the Basic Channel school (though I’m obviously a huge fan of that approach). The label pretty much died when my distributor went under. Nowadays, there seems to be plenty of things Dub related out and about—I don’t really know how Disruptor would fit into the scheme of things and if there would be a need for it. Having a label again would be cool though, mainly to be able to present things a certain way. But I would probably start with something fresh and new. 


5.  Outside of music, what else do you like to do in your free time?  

When there is free time to be had, I mainly ride my bike, rent movies, try and keep my cats out of trouble, sometimes be social, sometimes be antisocial, drink overpriced coffee drinks, check out a show or club here and there, and do my best to remain mindful. And on that note, the movie rental recommendation of the month is: The Railway Man.

Bryan Zentz is a music fanatic, producer, DJ, and artist living in the Pacific Northwest of the US. He has been making electronic music for over two decades, drawing from a wide array of influences. Bad Brains, Skinny Puppy, Basic Channel, Amebix, Robert Hood, Plastikman, Jeff Mills, Cajmere, Human League, Mantronix, Cabaret Voltaire, Inner City, Marley Marl, Kraftwerk and Mad Professor have all held a special place in his heart and ear.

Imprints such as EXperimental, Definitive, Jericho, Soma, Intec, CMYK Musik, Thoughtless, and Plus 8 among many others have released his recordings over the years. He is honored to have had his music featured in the playlists of a diverse range of DJs: from John Peel to Francois Kevorkian, Anja Schneider to Robert Hood. As a DJ and live performer, his sets have taken him across the world to legendary venues: Twilo (Nyc), Fabric (London), Womb (Tokyo), The Rex (Paris), as well as festivals like I Love Techno and The Detroit Electronic Music Festival.

Bryan currently resides in rainy Portland Oregon where he rides his bike, collects books on design & typography, and eats the occasional vegan donut.

Growing up in the bustling music scene of London, Aaron Snapes championed old school hip hop, drum and bass, trance, and garage before house music eventually took over. Never one to get caught up in the compartmentalization of genres though, Aaron has a simple and easy guideline in the studio, “I just want to make fun, groovy music for people to dance to.” Further detailing his musical canvas with his imaginative music, Aaron keeps bodies movin’ and beats jackin’ as he returns to Perfect Driver Music for the On It EP out on December 8th.

“On It” will surprise you at the beginning of the extended player with its borrowed minor keys and will then delight you with an attention to detail that sprinkles percussion in triplet form overtop shuffling claps and snares. Up next is “Know You Better” whose bassline bounces like a guttural bayonet and then leads you to rising melodies that melt into detuned menagerie. On the remix tip, Treasure Fingers brings trouble and midrange bass with his edit of “On It” while Jay Robinson reconstructs the melody’s chord structure. Closing out the remixes (and the EP entirely) is Eyes Everywhere’s version of “On It” with a back-to-basics nature, impacting harder than one might first think.

Whether he’s bringing the space bass or vibing with the Amsterdam underground, for 2014 Aaron Snapes is
definitely on it.

Your Love (Waze And Odyssey Remix)

Cocoon Recordings is back in full force with the follow up to last year’s superb vinyl compilation ‘Dots & Pearls’. Providing a tracklisting that is nothing less than the modern interpretation of House, Techno and Tech-House ‘Dots & Pearls II’ eschews monotonous loops and predictable formulas and rather delivers a selection packed with energy and depth. 

Ilario Alicante and Todd Bodine have the honour of opening the record and very much set the tone for the feel of the album. "Modern Apocalypse" gives the impression that the duo wanted to produce a matching track to follow up Ambivalent's "Iwato" in a DJ set. The record has a wonderfully stripped and spacious feel to it, conjuring up an early hours feel with its entrancing effect and stabs plucking at the air around you. Next up we have Subb-an feat. Jacob Phono with "In The Night" a track that explores how the sound and atmosphere of big 90s Techno acts like Underworld can be transferred into our contemporary Minimal and Deep House universe, a task in which they succeeded brilliantly. Resonant beats and percussions, some 808 claps, funky fills and filtered layers match perfectly with the hypnotic vocals and form an impressing overall result that fits into the DJ's set at any time during the night. 
Mark Reeve's contribution "Carry Me" springs from typically Reeve-like UK-influenced House sounds. Softly filtered layers and cool vocal elements provide the right mood, and the long build-up with much patience and even more emotion makes "Carry Me" one of the best and deepest British Tech House tracks in recent times, a certain winner for fans of 20:20 Vision and Global Communication. 
With "Jellied Eels", Marco Effe steps up to try and win the prize of 'the fattest beats on the compilation'. The E-piano chords are a sure fire hit and the warm layers in the breaks loosen the heavily muscled beats a little, but they can't hide the fact that there is an energy packed affair, which erupts in a perfect surrounding and will take any dancefloor beyond the boiling point. It’s easy to hear why this has been sitting in the sets of Sven Väth and Luciano for some time. Danito & Agent! have just recently delivered their Cocoon debut and their mix of deep House elements and big-room Techno citations has already convinced the experts. Their track "Raw Symphony" is no exception here but rather travels further into the realms of cinematic techno. Detroit sends its regards with a fat bass/strings combination and much pathos, based on an elegant House-style beat that never demands too much and leaves enough space for the above mentioned big-room sound. With "Iwato", Minus figurehead Ambivalent contributes a slightly dark but still deep and minimal Techno track that lives on a juicy Chicago bass line and pays tribute to the compilation's motto by using uncommon sounds and effects. The pearls are literally hearable in the arrangement, setting accents in order to prevent the track from sounding too rounded-off. Hypnotic and kicking, but still unpredictably different. Berlin, 07:30 h in the morning – here's the matching soundtrack for a winter sunrise! 
Harvey McKay's "First Strike From Mars" sounds like its title suggests, and Captain McKay doesn't take prisoners. Demanding, massive and equipped with a mighty beat, the tune is reminiscent of recent Slam releases or some of the stronger Santos productions. A peak time production that has only one message: no escape and total madness on the dancefloor, this is a winner that has been getting plays from Sven Väth and Luciano! Sawlin's "Posay" is plumbs the depths of the Techno ocean, with plenty of echo and even more reverb, his remote metallic percussion sounds create an atmosphere that would also be perfect as the soundtrack for a big art installation. "Posay" shows that Techno in the year 2012/2013 does not only mean 'in-your-face', but rather depth and elegance. 

Besides the vinyl edition, ‘Dots & Pearls II’ is also released in a digital version, which contains four extra pearls, in addition to the eight tracks of the vinyl version: With "Sequence Of Moments", Martinez sends the listener back to the high times of that DBX-influenced Detroit sound full of bleeps and blonks, like Daniel Bell or Fred Gianelli perfected at the time. However, he doesn't deliver a retro piece at all, but combines the raw and direct vibe of Bell with modern sounds, layers and pads, and thus moves himself a little towards the Reboot or Johnny D corner. With their contribution "The Gate", Patrick Kunkel & Sascha Barth follow the current sound of now: matching parts of House, Minimal and Techno, in a skilful mix that, on the one hand is reminiscent of the hypnotic-minimal DJ sets of Ricardo Villalobos and on the other hand releases energy galore, in order to make demanding ravers happy. This is definitely one for fans of Pele and Matthias Tanzmann. Next Ross Evana pays tribute to fat Chicago beats and follows Sneak & Co. with his superb production "Cheget". The kick drum pumps, the claps and hi-hats clack heavily and the thick, pitched-down organ stabs in combination with the percussive staccato vocal fragments make the whole thing even more driving. And as if this wasn't enough, Evana adds some industrial sounds and effects that would easily fit in any big Depeche Mode remix, just lacking Dave Gahan's vocals in order to make the crowd freak out. Playing, dancing, partying, you have everything in here. With their track "Still Laughing", Fumihiro Hoshi & Tadac present their unique and different sound and provide a perfect closing opus to this outstanding compilation.
