Paul Oakenfold is the DJ, remixer, and producer who did more than anyone else to break house music in Britain during the late '80s. During 1987-1988, Oakenfold hosted a series of crucial club nights that introduced thousands of Brits to house music. Just a few years later, he helped push the new dance crossover into the charts by masterminding hit productions by Happy Mondays (among others) and forming one of the most successful dance labels of the 1990s, Perfecto Records. Even well over a decade after his emergence, Oakenfold remained, quite simply, dance music's most popular DJ.

Born in London in 1963, Oakenfold began mixing at the age of 16, and hooked up with friend Trevor Fung to play soul and rare groove at a basement bar in Covent Garden. He also spent some time in New York during the late '70s, working for Arista Records and soaking up the disco scene through Larry Levan's genre-spanning sets at the Paradise Garage. Back in England by the early '80s, Oakenfold worked as a club promoter and British agent for the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C. He continued DJing as well, and eventually ended up at the Project, one of the first venues for house music in England, in 1985-1986. With Fung and another friend named Ian St. Paul, Oakenfold was introduced to the exploding club scene on the vacation island of Ibiza ...

This timeless piece of classical music returns from the original DJ who brought it to the electronic scene.

People may think that Tiesto, or even William Orbit brought Samuel Barbers ‘Adagio For Strings’ to the electronic music masses, but in fact it was the one and only Paul Oakenfold – its first airing on the cult classic ‘Fluoro’ mix from right back in 1996.

“I debated whether to make a cover of this one because there were already two massive covers in circulation – first William Orbit’s take which was released in 1999 and was the first single from his album “Pieces in a Modern Style” which came out in 2000 and then Tiesto’s big club version which came out in 2005 and which I think was one of the singles from his Just Be album (2004). But in the end every time I took Adagio out of the proposed Trance Mission tracklist – it felt incomplete. It was such an important record for me during that period (mid 90’s when I used to play Barber's original through to mid 00’s with all the different mixes that followed) and always got such a huge reaction whenever I played it. I’ve always wanted to make and release my own version – ever since we released the Skip Raiders take on it called “Another Day” which came out on Perfecto in 1999.

For my cover I wanted to make something completely aimed at the US scene. Something that would work really well in my sets in the US where I seem to spend the majority of my time touring.

I added a vocal to my new version which I know some people will see as sacrilege but I've never been one to conform to rules and regulations. Every time I play this out it literally takes the roof off. There is so much love out there for this record. Hats off to Samuel Barber. If only he was still around to see what his classical composition was doing to dancefloors worldwide today!”

The many street-level entrances to Le Stud give the bears, the dads and the lads easy access to the decadence that awaits them inside. Billiard tables and video-game poker machines line the interior of Le Stud and provide opportunities (or at least a cover) for what goes on further inside. Start on the cruisey dancefloor. Then position yourself in a dark corner and let the fun begin. Musical styles range from dance and disco to new wave and rock, but after a while, you’ll be too busy to pay attention.

That's French for “Black Eagle,” and that should give you a hint that this place takes the leather scene very seriously, indeed. Head for the back bar for live fetish shows that make San Francisco or New York (or, for that matter, pre-Castro Havana) look like Peoria. During the summer, the outdoor street-level terrace is filled to the rafters. Theme nights of leather and rubber gear draw in those the hard-core — or at least those who dress that way.
