Up next for Tapes #162 is South London-based DJ Ariane V, with a recorded set from Corsica Studios’ Palestine Fundraiser back in May.

Ariane’s reputation continues to rise as her sound becomes ever-more assured. Whether turning up the energy with breaks and acid cuts at peak time or locking in for a heads-down ride, her selections are rooted in a deep sense of groove. Emotive house cuts give way to driving prog, punctuated by leftfield disco, glistening italo, and euphoric piano moments. all delivered with a joyful appreciation and deep connection to the music.

This is the recording from my set at Parameter 10, Public Works, San Francisco on 17 May 2025. 

The room was comically packed by the time I started (11pm) and the crowd was visibly itching to lift off, but it was so early in the night and the rest of the (stacked) lineup leant so heavily towards UK and bass-heavy music that I decided to leave the dubstep to the professionals, keep it slow and go in the opposite direction: mid 120s, wriggly, psychedelic, gurgly, engrossing, a little weird but also sometimes fun. Maybe on some level I was level preparing myself for Return To The Source in Detroit the following weekend – though ironically I ended up playing much faster and with more broken beats at RTTS than I did here. In any case, I had a blast. Been really enjoying exploring the 120-130 zone recently. Thanks to Nick for having me back, hope you all enjoy the recording.

Somehow it feels fitting that 1+1 equals not only 11, but also the two slabs of vinyl carrying Henry Hodson’s music here. A small inside joke, perhaps, but also a sign of how naturally this record came together: instinctive and shaped with intention. Hodson — who first appeared on Limousine Dream and later with a subtle and beautifully controlled EP via Silky Beats — continues his trajectory between deep house warmth and minimal clarity. These six tracks are drawn with the sort of fine-grained rhythmic detail that rewards attention without ever demanding it. Light-footed percussion, elegant restraint, grooves that breathe. The double 12’’ format isn’t a gimmick; it’s a commitment. Each track gets the physical space and sonic depth it needs.

Before one P-Bar closing in 2023, we were driving up to the club and I suddenly noticed the Full Moon. I said, "Fuck yeah, I'm gonna have extra energy tonight!" I always have problems sleeping when the moon is like a spot light in the sky, so that was a much needed dose of lunar energy for the night. It's become a good omen whenever there's a Full Moon on a gig night!

I've come full circle in many ways since my journey in music began: producing, digging for records, and cherishing special moments with friends and with dancefloors over the last 20 years. Some of the records in this mix I've owned for more than half my life and I'm still hearing new qualities and nuances in them...! Thanks for the invitation to contribute to this series! X
