With their 4th LP, The Black Hollies have effectively stripped off their retro leanings and immersed themselves in a spacey psychedelic dream whose time and place is as universal as the melodies that float in and out of the haze they've created. Led by Justin Angelo Morey and his long time collaborators Herbert Wiley and Jon Gonnelli (all three of whom are also members of the recently reunited Rye Coalition) as well as drummer Nick Ferrante (White Hills), the band's latest album is the product of nearly three years of writing and recording.

Initially conceived in 2010 the record was repeatedly scrapped and restarted while Morey demoed a huge amount of music in both Jersey City and Nashville. Ultimately he entered Moonlight Mile studio in Hoboken with engineer Mike Moebius in January of 2012 with 20+ songs loosely arranged in his head and a plan to put them all to tape over the course of 3 weekends. Instead the process took nearly a year of constant recording and rearranging, with the band members all contributing to an endless wall of sounds utilizing rare fuzz boxes and old combo organs and Morey himself tracking everything from his usual bass and vocals to drums and guitar. 

The end result is the most timeless record of the bands career with influences as divergent as Spacemen 3, Can, The 13th Floor Elevators, and The Stone Roses weaving in and out of noise drenched pop songs and extensive hallucinatory suites that never fully obscure the catchy core that exists Somewhere Between Here And Nowhere.

GHOST WAVE - BLUES SIGNAL'79

Ernest Jenning Recording Co. is excited to announce that Grandchildren will release their new album Golden Age on May 7th. Produced by Chris Powell from Man Man and Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog), Golden Age is the band's sophomore release. In celebration of the upcoming album, Grandchildren are releasing the first track off Golden Age entitled "Sunrise," available for posting HERE. Additionally, the band, who have previously toured with Man Man, Seabear and O'Death, will tour this March in support of the upcoming LP, including dates at SXSW. Full tour dates are below.

Grandchildren began in 2008 as the solo recording project of Aleks Martray, forging intricately layered arrangements with only an acoustic guitar, a mic and a loop pedal. Since then, it has evolved into a 6 piece pop-orchestra known for its high energy live performances featuring dueling drums, circuit bending electronics and an instrument swapping horn section. On stage, the tiny 5'3" frontman remains stoic, at the eye of the storm, encircled by a whirlwind of animated instrumentalists, belting out melodies in a voice that defies his own stature. Martray attributes Grandchildren's eclectic sound to his nomadic upbringing in a military family across Europe and the US and his journeys throughout Latin America as a young adult:

"I think when you live and travel all over the world from such a young age your mind constructs a sort of map that is an amalgamation of all of these different worlds. I see the music as a soundtrack for this puzzle-like landscape that otherwise would exist only in my head."

As their 2010 debut album Everlasting aimed to piece together the feel of various places, their new record attempts to collage together various points in time.

Golden Age reads like a scrapbook in homage to that elusive era that serves as a reference point for how we'd like to remember "the way things used to be", how they "ought to be", but probably never really were. The recordings stem from this concept musically, pulling from a vast array of influences, and thematically, swirling around it from all angles with songs of hope and disillusionment, optimism and doubt, nostalgia and anticipation, caution and regret. The cinematically layered musical arrangements set the stage for unique vocal stylings that take on a range of characters in what Martray describes as something akin to method acting. "The lyrics are simple because it's all subtext to the music. They're more like the voice of a character and the music is the setting, and so the story unfolds between them." As these scenes play out, what unfolds is a narrative about how we project our fears, hopes, desires on everything and everyone around us, forcing our simplistic ideals on a complex world.

Since their first appearance in 2008, Miniboone have shared stages with acts as diverse and acclaimed as the B-52s, Art Brut, and Real Estate, and brought their witches' brew of caffeinated, unabashedly-delivered power pop to audiences at festivals such as Bonnaroo, South By Southwest, CMJ and NXNE.

After two EPs and one 7" comes the first full-length, covering the fertile crescent of stylistic ground between Squeezey brain-pop and Queeny big-sounds while, if you listen close enough, telling the classic story of friends trying to find their place in a rapidly changing urban environment that wants nothing more than to co-opt them, confuse them into adulthood, jerk them around from desk job to spineless desk job, and scare them straight with tales of unfulfilled dreams and missed chances. They recorded the album over the course of a year at Serious Business studios in Manhattan with producer Travis Harrison (Lifeguards, Homosexuals) and the result is equal parts proto-punk rave up ("The Superposition of Human Affection"), harmony basted slow burn ("Magic Eye"), and Hall-and-Oates-spectrum smooth-rock ("Baby, I Hope So").
