Anyone who knows even the smallest amount about the rich history of Goldie’s Metalheadz label will know that its catalogue is full of defining moments, from the two-step simplicity of ‘Pulp Fiction’ to the all-encompassing rave review of ‘Up All Night’. Snatches of musical ingenuity that stand apart from the milieu, leading the way with great innovations in style and substance, creating an innate sense of timelessness that lend each track an inimitable Headz feel.

Continuing in that great tradition is Rido’s new single ‘Twisted’. With a background based in writing film scores, Rido knows exactly how to use music to draw out emotional reactions. ‘Twisted’ manages to walk the line of epic subtlety. Tense strings and sparse piano melodies provide an affecting backdrop over which New Zealand based artist Thomas Oliver’s vocals drift beautifully.

While the build up may be all beauty, there’s something of the beast when it comes to the drop. Fans of Future Cut’s ‘Obsession’ or Concord Dawn’s ‘Say Your Words’ will undoubtedly identify with the aesthetic juxtaposition at play in this track. However, Rido’s sense of subtlety comes into play once again as he infuses ‘Twisted’ with menacing bass combinations and expertly crafted ‘Amen’ and ‘Boymerang’ drum edits that never feel contrived or forced. 

Not releasing his grip on a sense of the epic, Rido offers up ‘Core’, another film score inspired track, for the AA side of this release. Gradually building and growing with an almost organic feel, this one slowly works its way into your consciousness before dropping into some eyes down D&B that will no doubt have the dance floor churning to its undulating bassline.

Following a string of successful releases Krakota is back with a massive 14-track collection. ‘Strange System’ marries heavy distortion with razor-sharp clarity, crossing and colouring the black and white lines of drum & bass with his versatile style and slick production. His debut album stands tall and proud shouting his individual sound. Never underestimate Krakota, he’s full of surprises!

In ‘Colour Of The Past’ Krakota simultaneously tugs at the heartstrings and hits hard in the face with vocals brought by new finding Karina Ramage. The French-Scottish-English songwriter was a surprise find by label boss Chris Goss as he discovered her busking on London’s South Bank. Another clear highlight is his partnering with our second label boss for ‘Powder Coated’ - the perfect mix of London Elektricity soul and Krakota power.

‘Half Life’ is a reminder back to the massive dancefloor damage caused by ‘Ice Hands’, ‘Ghosts’ and ‘Xylo’ last year. Its gritty split of siren calls and deep bouncing bass hits in all the right places. Krakota's musical edge shows in ‘Elastic’ with funk flare and horns hailing. ‘North Winds’ and ‘Turn of Fate’ blend arcade style synth work with crackles of white noise.

A consistently brilliant producer, Krakota’s carved out his own style over the past few years getting his name noticed on dancefloors around the UK and Europe. He's received support from the likes of BBC Radio 1's Friction and well remembered for his tear out live mix on BBC Radio 1Xtra's Soundclash in 2015. His solitary stance in the drum & bass world has been making waves and that’s sure to continue with his outstanding debut album ‘Strange System’.

Compiled by our chief designer Ricky Trickartt and MD/Art Director, Chris Goss, this book illustrates the growth of an idea. Snapshots of our early days in Baron’s Court, when Tom Kelsey became our integral ‘Third Man’, helping us drive a fledgling business forwards. Then into the Purple Gates, where we have spent the past dozen years nurturing a growing team of staff and artists, building underground careers and international event strategies.

Many of you will remember the sound of drum & bass circa 2001. For some a golden era of a genre which had recently grown from a British institution into an immense global movement cutting swathes through clubs and festivals the world over. That year saw Manchester’s Future Cut break through with arguably their most memorable and haunting release to date.

Metalheadz catalogue number METH040 was released in the summer of 2001 to the thunderous rush of DJs clamouring for white label promos and the sound of crowds losing themselves whenever it was dropped. The A side, of course, being Future Cut’s ‘Obsession’ – a track oozing with classic Metalheadz hallmarks and overlaid with Jenna G’s infectious vocals. 

Fast forward to 2012 and Metalheadz are preparing to unleash a stunning reworking of this stone cold classic. Set to be released as a limited edition one-sided picture disc vinyl on Metalheadz’ Razor’s Edge offshoot, the Ulterior Motive remix of ‘Obsession’ will undoubtedly bring this beautiful piece of drum & bass to a modern audience.

Ulterior Motive, turn in a respectful and hard-hitting remix that pays homage to Future Cut’s original musical vision while adding enough punch for modern dance floors.

Haunting Headz pads pave the way for Jenna G’s luscious vocal which envelopes you, drawing you in before Ulterior Motive batter your senses with waves of crisp, rolling breakbeats, pounding bass notes and grinding synth stabs. Fans of the original will not be disappointed as Ulterior Motive retain all the signature sound of the original while bringing their own fresh style into the mix.
