My family line has lived in the United States for 150 years but many of them came from Switzerland. I have always been disturbed how naïve it is to not learn from history. There is no standing on the sideline in the war against a tyrants oppression. Ukraine has taken on the leadership mantle of the moral core of the west. As a United States citizen I will continue to support Ukraine in their battle against Russia and against all other influences.

As a farmer myself or 25+ years of active farming I have seen politicians and financial people and other businesses take advantage of farmers in every way imaginable and disrespect our profession.

Farmed and Dangerous

Over the last 30+ years I am personally witnessed the decline of the small medium sized farmer and how businesses all along the value chain take advantage of us. Also politicians use environmental and animal welfare lies that are only partially based on truth to manipulate the public into being afraid. And then they totally disregard other real environmental and welfare issues that only the farmer can deliver best to what is under his or her care but it is too expensive to educate the public and so farmers have to continually comply with more and more red tape and it’s just not worth it in the end it’s such a small margin business.

He walks slowly under the gray sky,
his hands in his pockets, another vice,
his tired eyes, his heart in the balance,
too many weights on his chest for a while now.

A job that keeps him in a cage,
a house that now seems like sand,
it slips away between his fingers,
and love... only nostalgia.


And so he gets lost behind a bottle,
in a sip that takes him away,
he seeks peace but finds an abyss,
another mistake, another half-awakening.

A song about that feeling of disconnection with reality and the temptation to renter the atmosphere to engage in the chaos but you know you want to just float about the fray, the pressure, and the pain. You just want to rest, but you know that there is work to be done and they underestimate you so you have the advantage.

It’s not only the Empire builders the Titans of this world that leave wakes. Some entities become so powerful that they think they are invincible but no one is. Sometimes even the most intelligent creatures are caught off guard in frozen beer by their own mortality. This is a representation of the old British empire mixed with the hubris of the men and women on the Titanic who thought it was unsinkable. It also holds many modern day parallels.

ENTROPY

This song is about adaptation and realizing that while you may share the same pop culture, sports, and music interests with someone there comes a time when you have to stand up and define yourself to step out and create your own future. If you don’t like how a culture or government around you defines reality you have to evolve. To stop reproducing their lies. I know this is not a luxury everyone has but it is something to strive for. We are all human but we have grown numb through arrogance and meaningless pleasure and have looked the other way from people’s suffering. As an American I want to return to our identity as protector of freedom and not isolationist or enforcer of freedom. In my mind Ukraine is a perfect example of carrying the mantle of the freedom of our forefathers and mothers who bled and died to carve freedom from the beasts of this world. All of the pop culture references in this song are just fun examples of how we distract ourselves with anything in order to ignore others.

DRONE

This is a song about judging others and always believing you’re the top of the moral food chain. About always reading the world from the perspective that you are the infallible protagonist and not digesting any divergent opinions. It’s about the stories we tell ourselves and the nature of others in order to rationalize our behavior without getting to know people outside of our comfort zone and our strata.

MADE BY MONSTERS

This is a contemplative piece face on the theme of the Wizard of Oz. It continues with my common themes of searching for identity but also deals with grappling of responsibility for society ills and how we change few things that it’s always someone else’s responsibility but this “Dorothy” in her Ruby slippers is finally confronting some of these sins even though it is changing her. It remains to be seen if that is for the better.
