ZAPATA (Hardmatter Records / Berlin)

Zapata is a Berlin-based DJ and producer who runs Hardmatter Records (@hardmatterrecords) and the recently-inaugurated Streetman Records imprint.  Besides running these two labels, he also organises the “DiscoDisco” party at Berlin’s underground Repeat Bar, in which DJs are encouraged to break the four-to-the-floor mold by playing funk, jazz, afro, and anything else that falls in between. Alongside JVXTA, Zapata has worked with Javonntte and Malik Alston, among others, to curate a deep, jazzier electronic sound focused on live improvisation and soul. 

This mix reflects Zapata’s penchant for eclectic selections, but also keeps to dreamier, atmospheric sounds. The mix presents the DJ and producer in a more pensive and reflective mood, moving from the ambient sounds of Gigi Masin to dreamier New York cuts. In his own words: “I wanted to present artists and styles that matter to me and that have been overlooked, while presenting the deeper part of what Hardmatter is all about.”

Deep Club Podcast #32: Zapata

This is a 3 hour live set recorded at The Grand Factory in Lebanon last weekend. Starting in Melbourne, I had played 8 cities in 9 days and this was the last gig.

The Grand Factory is a fairly large but hidden away space at the top of an old bed making factory (pictured). 

The crowd, the venue and the city are amazing and it was the perfect ending to a week of no sleep.

Sasha's superb remix of alternative indie artist SYML's critically acclaimed single 'The Bird' is out now on Nettwerk

After Sasha's successful collaboration with Kölsch 'The Lights' this year, his remix of 'The Bird' gives the track new wings through a compelling bassline and bubbling staccato percussion, complementing the original haunting vocals and poignant guitar. 

‘When SYML approached me to remix ‘The Bird’, I couldn’t wait to get in the studio’ Sasha says. ‘The original has beautiful ethereal melodies, and incredible vocals, so there were amazing parts to work with. I just had to get the beats right and I’m really happy with how it turned out.’

Always innovative, Sasha is no stranger to reinterpreting music outside the electronic genres. Fans of his audaciously assured reworks of Rüfüs Du Sol's 'Innerbloom' and Klangstof's 'Hostage' will be thrilled with this new offering.

The original release from Seattle-based artist and producer SYML (aka Brian Fennell) was one of the 'Best 11 New Songs We Heard in February (2019)' by NPR: 'takes him to glitchier and more soaring terrain, like some sort of gorgeous pastiche of Hozier and Sigur Rós.'

April 20 Promo - An Odyssey of Isolation

Pete's passion for music began at an early age, after being expelled from school as a teen, he started a band with 2 close friends, taught himself to play guitar and drums and they hit the road. After a road trip to Ibiza in 87, and the first whisperings of ecstasy and acid house, he decided that electronic music was the future, and traded his drum kit for a pair of Technics turntables. After playing numerous illegal parties around the South East of England he gained his first residency in 1990 at the Hand & Spear in Surrey, and soon turned it into one of the biggest nights in the whole of the UK. Pete's DJ career took off quickly and it wasn't long before he was guesting all over Europe. In '92 he launched Ugly Bug records. It was an instant success, especially with big hitting radio djs Pete Tong and Judge Jules. Pete became a resident guest on Kiss 100fm, and his first release as his main recording alias, The Shaker, ',Just Lick It', became the club hit of the year, and was signed to over 30 compilation albums. The remix work came flooding in, from labels such as London, FFRR, Hooj, Ore, Fade, and Perfecto. His remix of Zee's Dreamtime was essential new tune on Pete Tong's BBC Radio1 show, and finally in 96 Pete signed to XL recordings, after a 3 way struggle between A&M, XL, and Maifesto to secure his signature. He went on to release 3 more singles under the Shaker guise˜Mooncat', 'Strong to Survive' and 'Star' which were all massive club anthems around the world. His djing skills started to attract the talents of promoters as far afield as Russia, S.Africa, as well as New York, L.A. and Denver in the USA. Pete was a regular guest at Amnesia and Bora Bora in Ibiza, as well as an international resident at Firestone, Buzz, and Simons in the US. For most, this would have been the peak of an outstanding career, but Pete was after something a bit more substantial. Despite the massive chart success, Pete reinvented his sound and launched a new label: Red Ant Records. Over 150 releases later, Red Ant is going from strength to strength. Cutting edge underground dance music. Pete Bones may not take himself too seriously, his music however, is another story. The label has collaborating artists such as Duncan Gray, The Shaker, Justin Robertson, Al Mackenzie, Richard Sen and Jezebell, always careful to avoid the restrictions born of the obsession with pigeon-holing dance music.  Pete has toured with American industrial legends the Thrill Kill Kult, and played alongside Nick Warren, Sasha, Carl Cox, Tommie Sunshine and Mr C. As an artist Pete has signed to the highly rated CitySeven records out of London, Superfreq and Pangea Records from Los Angeles. Now living in Brighton UK, Pete has his infamous Fear & Loathing night well established and is making waves in the UK's festival scene.
