My special guest this week is one of my favourite artists, Jet Boot Jack. He is a phenomenal DJ, remixer and producer who blends together Disco, House and Funk to create an upbeat vibe that will set any dancefloor on fire. His tracks have such energy and uplifting melodies. And he is prolific with his songwriting, with a new track released practically every week.

His tracks have clocked up over 5 MILLION streams to date, and he’s had dozens of Hypeddit Number 1’s with his Disco House bootleg remixes of major artists such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Madonna and Chic.

His original material is equally impressive, with DOZENS of releases on major record labels such as Hot Digits, Tropical Disco, Midnight Riot and Masterworks Music, and featuring renowned vocalists such as Kathy Brown and Michelle Weeks.

As a DJ, he has played alongside epic artists such as the Chemical Brothers, DJ Yoda, Sir Norman Jay, Soul II Soul, Bombay Bicycle Club, Metronomy and The Libertines to name but a few.

Last year he launched a talented all-female band to perform his productions on stage, bringing a vibrant and refreshing live element to the Disco and House scene.

SERGE GAINSBOURG - Requiem Pour Con (68's Dj Nobody Jazzy Groove Re Edit)

"Matasuna Records" is delighted to make a musical detour to Mexico for the first time with its new release. The 7inch contains two rare Latinfunk & -Soul songs of Mexican band "Apache". The songs "Liberate" and "Hombre" were released in 1975 & 1976 and are now available on vinyl again for the first time ever. This time Matasuna companion "Voodoocuts" is back again to contribute a formidable rework of "Hombre".

Members of the band "La Fórmula ER77" formed "Apache" in the early 70s in Torreón, Mexico. The 8-piece band performed on many stages, but became known to a larger audience through an appearance on the popular Mexican TV show "Siempre en Domingo". Another success was their song "Kung Fu Chino", which was popular throughout Latin America.

In 1976, their first LP "Del Bumpin Al Hustle" was released, which contains, with one exception, only cover versions of international hits from that time. Although the originals were popular music, Apache adopted them with their own funky attitude.

At the end of the decade, the original group disbanded. Two members joined with other musicians in the early 80s to pursue a different musical direction under the new band name "Tropicalisimo Apache", which is still active today.

"Liberate" is a song composed by "Rafaél Gonzáles, who was also responsible for the production of the LP. The song is the only original composition on the album and differs stylistically from the other songs not only because of that: Liberate is a heavy Latin funk joint par excellence that leaves you wanting more!

On the flip side, you won't be disappointed: "Hombre" is another great song composed and arranged by the band's trumpet player, "Ernesto Haros". "Voodoocuts" Rework strips down the original to its instrumental base to skillfully build a new arrangement, which is enriched by additional samples, a bunch of beats and breaks and various effects. Without a doubt another tropical dancefloor treat!

Dancing in your Kitchen with Pete Le Freq 4.3.21

If ever there was someone who the phrase “How does he find time to make that?” was about, serial editor and remixer Pete Le Freq is it. His reworks have been played on BBC Radio 6 regularly by Craig Charles, and DJs the world over, and the sheer number of tracks he produces have caused people to suggest he doesn't sleep much.

Pete started producing over 12 years ago, and made a bit of noise with his house label Llama Farm Recordings. He's been remixed by Jay-J, Eric Kupper and Kenny Summit, appeared on compilations with Joey Negro and LCD Soundsystem, and played alongside  the likes of Crazy P, Inland Knights, CagedBaby and a few others. 

Since discovering the things he was sampling were better than the things he was making, Pete found that retouching and reworking the originals gave him his producing mojo back, and soon after Alpaca Edits was born. 

The York based edits label has since become home to disco superstars such as Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, and Mannix. He’s been resident DJ at Sotano in York for the last 7 years, and this has fuelled his productions to greater heights. He’s known for playing 5 hour sets that incorporate both his new productions and others versions of serious disco action.

2019 has seen Pete get a vinyl release alongside the likes of Fingerman, Al Kent and Sleazy McQueen on Samosa Recordings, produce remixes for the likes of Hot Digits and Midnight Riot, as well as having 4 eps of his reworks on his own Alpaca Edits. He’s also debuted at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield, and made a return to rock the Toil Trees stage at Beatherder for the second year running. 

November saw him support Michael Gray and Fingerman at Distrikt in Leeds and Derek Kaye in York. The year ended with him beating the likes of Mousse T and Ray Mang in the Traxsource Nu-Disco Top 100 Artists of the year. 

Lockdown saw Pete go into rework overdrive, running a weekly Thursday night stream, as well as starting a regular show on Street Sounds Radio. He also worked with Ashley Slater of Freak Power on some original tracks.

2021 has seen the return of Pete’s That Needs An Edit nights in York, and will culminate in December with a guest slot from Shaka Loves You.
