Relive the highs and flows of a club closing through @minor-science's evocative In Session mix.

In his words: "I had the pleasure of playing a few closing sets in the weeks before lockdown, including at Panorama Bar for the Whities party. Each time I play one I learn a lot about the specific kind of flow & energy which works at the end of the night. By the time I started preparing this mix all my gigs had been cancelled for the foreseeable future, and it seemed appropriate to record something with an ‘ending’ feeling. So the mix is intended as a kind of condensed closing set. It’s more linear than my usual studio mixes, and the structure of it is different: the first half catches that end-of-peaktime energy, then the second half funnels it into something more introspective."

The next Deep Mind Music mix comes from Angel D’lite, a much-loved DJ in London’s underground rave scene. She is known for her high energy colourful sets which fuse spiralling breakbeat, acid, trance, 90s classics and more. For her deep mind music mix, Angel D’lite explores the chill out room counterbalance to classic rave sounds. Taking listeners through twirling arps, ambient-trance, wistful downtempo and more, this lush and emotional mix brings together a web of influences new and old 🌸🔮🌟

Listening to this mix feels like being submerged in a fuscia-hued cosmic bubble bath. The first half lulls you in with gentle variations between shapes and colours, from Dopplereffekt to Enya. The second half of the mix dives into deep emotions, and trippy imaginal worlds, with lackadaisical beats and ponderous pads. Reminiscent of the best 90s ambient CD compilations I feel a soft nostalgia listening to this mix, striking a delicate balance between euphoric and introspective emotions. For this 16th episode we had the honor to catch up with long time label friend and highly gifted composer Vito Ricci and received a lovely mix too. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hello Vito, welcome to the series. How are you doing, NYC must have felt quite alien these last couple of weeks?

VR: Thanks for inviting me to the serie. I’ve always enjoyed being part of the MFM community. I’m doing great especially compared to many people who have to deal with the COVID-19 virus. I think the whole planet felt weird in the last couple of months. Of course as a composer / performer the work has dried up but we are not at the going broke stage yet!

MFM: You're originally from Canada, right? Can you tell us a bit more about young Vito and how he made his first steps in music?      

VR: Yes, I was born in Montreal. I was adopted by a family, living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn when I was 9 months old. Young Vito taking his first steps is a little romantic sounding. In reality, I was 21 when I moved to Greenwich Village in 1969. I had never played an instrument before that. I was so naïve. “One moves to the Village and becomes a musician”. Just like that! It’s a long story but I learned to play music jamming with people. I was a percussionist so it was easy to fit in, and I have a good beat.

MFM: One striking piece of music featured on I Was Crossing A Bridge is I'm At That Party Right Now. Can you tell a bit about how that track came about?

VR: Striking is right. Shocking is more like it! I was very surprised to hear that track when MFM sent me the masters and test pressing. I hadn’t heard or thought about that song in 30 years. I had forgotten it even existed. It’s from Confessions of a Dope Fiend, a play by Jeff Jones. We were simply trying to make fun of Disco. It was 1982 and disco was getting old and in the hands of the grown ups. Little drum machines had just became available and someone lent me one. So we just whipped up this little track. Everything is live to a 2 track tape recorder, overdubbing as I went along. One of the actors in the play Ron Vawter was performing it. Without Ron there would be no song. As soon as he comes on, it brings a smile to your face. A friend of mine who I know for 55 years heard it a few years ago and said it was the best thing I had ever written.

MFM: Technical revolutions have changed the music landscape a lot over the last decades. How do you feel about this, has it changed your perception or approach towards music?

VR: Technical innovations are always going on but as a composer, I got on that train in 1977. As a composer, one should be able to create music with a voice only. What I do is add what I think will make the music better. Of course the technological innovations make it cheaper to produce. This approach has not inspired me, but has motivated me as it provided more occasions for my music to be played.

MFM: Are you also passing on your experience and knowledge to next generations of talents? As a teacher maybe?

VR: Yes, I have had a few students all along and still do. Most of my students want to learn pop songs. The electronic students are already into it. I feel my job as a teacher is to figure out what they want to learn, other wise what I've learned in life through music is just keep doing it and think "I compose, sing, play guitar (whatever it is that you do) to pass the time", not for anything else.

MFM: Thank you for your contribution Vito. What inspired you to come up with this particular mix? Any other words you'd like to share with your fans/readers?

VR: Just being asked to create a mix is enough to inspire me.  I always wanted to be a DJ! Support music any way you can, buy records online, stream and enjoy music.
