Jeremiah Onaje' McCormick, 34, started writing raps at the age of 13. Musical influences include Spirit Warriorz, DMX, 2Pac, Bizzle, Lecrae, Canibus, Mystikal, Master P, Nas, Jayz, Em, TI, lil Wayne, Juve, Geto Boys, 8ball MjG, BONE, Ice Cube to name a few. Influences in life includes Yahshua, Bible, Family, Malcom X, Dr.King, and life experiences. Onaje's musical concept is life. "My songs are already predestined, I'm just blessed to crack the code" -Onaje'.

I remember being 10 years old challenging my friend Kevin to a beat battle. For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to do one thing and that's- make music. At a very young age, I fell in love with music, how complex and diverse and even how challenging it is. Music can be a work of beauty, or it can be aggressive and angry. The fact that a few notes and progressions can provoke some to fear, or even built up such strong emotions that it could make someone cry, still blows my mind. And after my first time witnessing a song come alive from nothing, I was hooked. I knew very early that this is the thing I would spend the rest of my life doing. But if only it was that simple.

I was born and raised in the Washington DC Area which isn’t actually the music capital of the world. Don’t get me wrong some of the most talented and creative artists I’ve met have been here. But generally speaking, there are no major label headquarters here or a large distribution companies or place where the who’s who or music “gatekeepers" hang, like maybe you would find somewhere like a New York, Atlanta, LA, etc. Not to mention the fact that as much as people love listening to music and the fact that music is everywhere from inside our cars to commercials about our cars, to even walking in your local grocery store. Despite music being such a music big part of our day to day lives, no one thinks you should do it as a career. “Have a plan B”, music isn't for everybody. People love to tell you what the odds are. (you see where this is going)

Fast forward a little, it's 2014 I’m married with one child walking to the mailbox pealing off eviction notices on my apartment's mailbox, scraping together money for food working at jobs I hate making little to no money. It’s at points like these that a man begins to think about his life and decisions. By this time, I had been producing for over 16 years ouch! For those 16yrs I had been thinking if I was good enough then things would just work out for me, I just had to make sure my music was good. 

The turning point came for me when, at the verge of just giving up, feeling like I was selfish for even wanting to be a producer, why couldn't I want to be a doctor, lawyer, something that would make more money, something with more stability. one day something clicked that had not before. This whole time I had been hating and complaining about this and that person and how could they be there and I’m here.  But maybe it wasn't about just being the “best”, but being the smartest, maybe it just wasn’t who I knew but also and maybe more importantly what I knew. From that point on I went hen on a journey of discovering, learning and discovering not only how do I make the best music, but how do I make the best brand and build an audience around that. How do I “Beat the Odds “. So now not only do I try pushing the limits and boundaries with how I approach music but also with how I approach everything. I know there are a lot of Artists and Producers who may feel like I felt so another huge part of what I am passionate about and love to do is, use and share all that I have learned because I know it’s possible to Beat the Odds.

In early 2007, however, the gods deemed it time to break the shackles of inconsistency and cast together two of Denver's most intense DJs – D.M.X and Diabolic. As D-Unit, they are Denver's deadliest deejay duo, each with enough history to impress even the most jaded clubbers. Both veterans of the Mile High City's underground music culture; they've seen plenty of action in the trenches and have united to create an unstoppable musical dynamo.
DJ D.M.X (not to be confused with the hip-hopster) is the 303 Collective’s original bad boy. He has been representing Denver for over two decades, twice placing among the top 3 in the annual USA Nightclub & Bar Spinoff in Las Vegas, winning Faderwars in 2000, and most notably being on the only DJ crew from the region asked to represent at San Francisco’s 2004 “Love Parade USA.” His partner in crime, deejay Diabolic, lives by the philosophy that deejaying is more than just “spinning records.” He comes armed with hip-hop-infused breaks and bangin' house as well as a veritable arsenal of turntablist tricks and scratching.
Their mission is simple – to usher in a new era of deejaying by increasing interest in the craft as well as breathing new life into the music and more energy into live sets. By shaking off the “human jukebox” misnomer/stigma and giving new meaning to the term performer, D-Unit is waging war on the currently accepted pop-culture drive-thru DJs.
When I dropped by the basement of Bruise Clothing for a training session, I got to see just what all the hype was about. After my eyes adjusted to the insanely orange walls I sized up their workstation and found an eclectic mix of old and new: Turntables side-by-side with CDJs, multiple mixers with FX, and of course crates of music. They got right down to business, kickin' the set off with some funk and old-school B-boy cuts and droppin' right into the mix with some bangin' breaks and house...
Afterward, we talked a bit about the scene and where things are headed.
IMAGE: Describe the Unit in one word:
DMX: Real. We ARE the real deal.
DIABOLIC: Fun. We're all about having fun and enjoying ourselves on stage so you can enjoy yourself on the dance floor... And when we see people having a good time we can feed off that energy and put it back into our music. It's like the Circle of Life or something...
IMAGE: What is it that makes D-Unit stand apart from other DJ teams?
DMX: For starters, we're more than just “the man behind the curtain” so to speak...
DIABOLIC: We really try to bring new things to the tables. I don't DJ – I perform. It's great when people say they love our music, but it's even better when they tell us how much they love watching our sets!
DMX: After our show, you'll know what the term “mannequin DJ killer” really means!
IMAGE: And as a whole, is the scene getting better or worse?
DMX: Depends how you look at it. If you can 'bring the funk' then keep it going...But there are so many kids nowadays who pick up a “DJ in a Box” kit and think they are superstars... Most don't have the motivation or patience to hone their skills and it's a big part of why a lot of people see DJs as “tools of the music” and not the other way around.
DIABOLIC: Well the music has definitely improved! As for the scene itself, electronic music is all about pushing the limits and trying new things... exposing different elements. Kids aren't willing to put themselves out there like that anymore...
IMAGE: Any parting shots for the masses?
DMX: If you are in the scene for the right reason - namely Music - then we're with you all the way. If you're in it solely to take [drugs] and not give back [to the vibe] you may need to rethink your priorities.
DIABOLIC: Whatever you do, do it safely - we'll see you on the dance floor!
