The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

Rysslands självbild hamnade i geopolitikens fokus under vintern 2022, då ännu en invasion förebådades i grannlandet Ukraina. Få i västvärlden kunde för sitt liv förstå vad som utgjorde grund för att en Vladimir Putin som ständigt tycktes finta och bedra sina rivaler och deras regelbaserade världsordning ånyo riktade ryska vapen mot slaviska bröder och systrar.

Men Ryssland är gränslöst, enligt Vladimir Putins egna ord, och utan att helt kunna bestämma om det ska tolkas bildligt eller bokstavligt ska vi nu gå så djupt vi kan i ett försök att hitta in i den ryske presidentens idévärld för att ställa oss frågan om vad Ryssland egentligen är och hur djupt landets identitetskris går.

För att hitta in i huvudet på Vladimir Putin tar vi vägen förbi tsarerna, klassikerförfattarna Leo Tolstoj, Fjodor Dostojevskij och Nikolaj Gogol via filosofer som Vissarion Belinskij och Nikolaj Danilevskij. Det är göbbar vi nog alla hört namnet på i förbifarten, men som väl få av oss egentligen kan koppla till Moskvas revanschlystna maktapparat av idag.
