She started giving me strange & weird looks until I realized she thought I was trying to make some moves on her. Then I explained to her that it was for a song chorus and everything was cool!

This is my first song from my up & coming album of cover songs called "Self Portrait". This classic was written in 1923 by Gerswhin and has been interpreted by thousands of artists. In selecting songs for my cover album one of the challenges was to select one of the nearly 400 songs by The Rolling Stones. When I first heard this song in 1966 I never thought in my wildest dreams that 53 years later I would be recording my own version. Even though sometimes it’s “a drag getting old” I can console myself with the thought that I’m one year younger than Mick Jagger and still Rockin' and singing my heart away.

Mother's Little Helper - Cover

Get To Work

As most musicians know you have to get licensing permission from the publisher of any song if you want to stream your cover version on Spotify, Apple Music etc. and if you want radio play. Also if you change any of the lyrics you also have to get permission. Imagine my surprise when Chuck Berry’s Publishers gave me the OK to change several of the words in this classic tune!
Needless to say “Johnny B. Goode” is considered one of the most recognizable songs in Popular music. It is credited as the first Rock ’n Roll song about Rock ’n Roll stardom. My version of this classic was deeply influenced by Peter Tosh. An interesting side note - when Chuck Berry originally wrote this song he changed “coloured boy” to “country boy” to ensure radio play.

One of my heroes has always been Johnny Cash and I wanted to include one of his songs on my cover album. I originally was going to record his version of Depeche Mode’s song “Personal Jesus”. After going through the amazing list of over 1500  songs that Johnny Cash wrote I came across this gem that he recorded in 1974. My immediate reaction was “BINGO” -  this is the song that does it for me. He was clearly a man ahead of his time. To date, he has sold over 90 million songs.
RIP Johnny Cash.

It’s hard to believe that this song written by Paul Simon in 1964 is over half a century old. Like a true work of art, it has withstood the test of time. An interesting anecdote Simon wrote this song in his bathroom where his guitar would have an “echo” effect.

Bio
In 2007 at age 63 Montrealer Peter Wheeler bought his first guitar. He then went to amazon.com and purchased a book called “How To Play The Guitar for Dummies”. Since then he hasn’t looked back. 

Sometimes serious - sometimes humorous Wheeler’s music seeks to re-capture the Classic Vibes  from the 70’s & 80’s. To best describe his music imagine Bob Dylan & The Doors meet The Clash & Leonard Cohen at the Hotel California & share a bottle of wine with Tarantino. Peter Wheeler is a poet - focusing all his energies into creating musical canvases to express his personal vision of the world surrounding him. 

For several years Peter was part of the local bar scene in the Greater Montreal area.  He performed as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for The Rock Roulette Band. His experiences giving live performances and continually improving his guitar playing has truly shown that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
