Rainy Spring Day (PA)

Music by Jeff Burns, https://soundcloud.com/jeff-burns-4, who apparently has been playing banjo for 1/8th the time I have and is leaving me in the dust, much to my delight. Jeff uploaded this as 'idea in D' the other day, with the idea of me filling it out. I should have been going to sleep late Tuesday night but the track called; I didn't quite get enough sleep but we got a good track out of it. I sent the source files off to Jeff today and blammo, he mixed it down and had it up on his page (again, https://soundcloud.com/jeff-burns-4) by this evening. 
Jeff composed the track and played the lead banjo part, on a steel string resonator banjo; if you listen closely to Jeff's original, you can hear his fingers on the banjo head making a great rhythmic effect. I knew that would get steamrolled in a bigger production but loved that insistent shuffle feel, so added the washboard first, followed by the guitar and eventually my low-strung gut banjo following his lead.

I found Jeff's music via Hank's page a while back and have really enjoyed his compositions, improvisations and collaborations, so it's a joy to be included in this project.

Picture: not a spring pepper, but snowdrops, taken last weekend. I've had some blooming since December (whenever snow cover abated enough) but man, that first warm day every spring, boy do they pop and put some pep in my step. Of course we got snow again on Monday but hey, one step at a time.

Old Friend Night

A sentimental tribute to my neighbourhood on the banks of the river Clyde, written and recorded on the eve of the Commonwealth Games which are being hosted here in Glasgow.

A tad similar to some of my other songs, namely 'Solway', 'Viewforth' and 'Sunrise', but never mind. Possibly letting some of my 70's influences show a bit here too.

This photo was taken a few hundred yards from my flat, on the bridge near the BBC HQ at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, on a surprisingly calm and sunny morning last winter.
