03 Between A Dream

Sitting in an airport, waiting for my traveling companion, I witnessed a heavy rainstorm accompanied with the most vivid rainbow I had ever seen. It almost seemed tangible, like you could break off a piece and put it in your pocket. This storm turned out to be the prelude to a series of unsettling life altering expierencs.

I imagine there was a time when spoken sounds were just syllables and the meaning was completely personal. I imagine this was the most honest communication humans ever had. It had to be completely honest because everyone involved knew that it was just sounds, and all interpretation was subjective. Maybe, some speakers used intonation. Maybe the origin of music was just an attempt at communication.

It is a mystery to me how our sense of connection to other people does not seem to have a dependance on the depth of experience we have had with them. For example, my wife is Chinese, our backgrounds and life experiences before we met had nothing in common. Different culture, food, language, education,  friends, music - different everything - yet somehow we connected. I have found that it is possible to know someone for years, yet remain emotionally distant. At other times, an ancient, deep bond may be felt even though the relationship is still new.

Generally speaking, we are unmasked in our families. This is especially true amongst siblings. Brothers and sisters often know the best, and the worst about one another far better than anyone else. Feeling this comradery with someone who is not a sibling is a very special bond.

I've heard it said that hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible. I believe this is true. Of all the forces of life, hope and love are the most powerful. 

This song was once reviewed in a music publication and the meaning of some of the words was completely missed by the reviewer. I feel it necessary to explain some lines in the pre-chorus. The singer lists a number of things that he doesn't need. The reviewer's comment was if these things aren't needed, how can the singer be hopeful about love. The point I was trying to make is that love is not based on need. Love is given freely. It is never the product of need or expectations.

10 What I Hope

After several years of wrting songs, this was the first I ever wrote which was intended to be a gift. Music has the power to stir up a broad range of notions and emotioins. These thoughts and feelings are thr gift of music.
