Welcome one and all to the second episode of Pet Projects, featuring Lancaster-based writer, illustrator and Creative Writing lecturer, Inés G. Labarta. In conversation with host Pete, Inés talks about her two black cats, Nori and Luna, and her current pet project: the release of her new novel, The Three Lives of Saint Ciarán (Blackwater Press), this month. Despite their shared hue and origin, Inés’s cats have proven very different in personality, which is perhaps appropriate given variety is the spice of life where she is concerned. 

In addition to having published in Spanish and English, Inés learnt Japanese as a student, writes her speculative fiction across a variety of genres (inc. migrant narratives, queer literature, magic realism, RPGs, monstrous fiction and the gothic), and produces her own podcast (The Wandering Bard), which you can find here on SoundCloud. 

Of herself, she says, ‘I am a citizen of nowhere because I feel at home in the Highlands, in Miyayima, in the Guadarrama mountains, in Edinburgh and Clonmacnoise. I didn’t choose to be born in Spain – but I do choose to consider this planet my home and to connect with others no matter where they come from.’ Fortunately for us, the family she has made with her partner, Nori and Luna is (mostly) keeping her in Lancaster just now.

Pet Projects - Episode 2 - Inés G. Labarta

For the third instalment of Pet Projects we are joined by actor and theatrical producer Nicole Garbellini for a fascinating chat. 

Having been scouted in Italy and performing at the Venice Biennale, setting up her own theatre company in Hong Kong, and thereafter completing her acting studies in London, where she is now based, Nicole is not used to being upstaged. However, her beloved cat Marty McFly has done his best to compete with her in a way that only cats can: appearing alongside Nicole and her husband David in ‘Close Quarters’, a YouTube series from writer Ryan King born in the Covid lockdowns, during which our animals – to many of us – became more important than ever. 

Some of the other subjects Nicole and I explore in this episode are the difficulties of transporting pets between countries; the challenges and joys of producing theatre, including ‘Mussolini’s Mistresses’, a play created in Hong Kong by Nicole’s Aurora Theatre, from writer/director Clare Stearns, but coming to the UK soon, and how cats are not as antisocial as ‘the man’ tells us – Marty as a grandpa to younger felines? Why not? He can teach them how to skateboard for starters. For all budding actors/cat owners, there is much to learn in this episode about both. Enjoy!

Pet Projects - Episode 3 - Nicole Garbellini

For the fourth instalment of Pet Projects, we are thrilled to welcome Jon, Jess and Roo. 

During the Covid lockdowns our very special guest Jon Hill not only welcomed ebullient double-doodle pup Roo into the family, joining older lady Jess, but also revived his love of baking: beginning a journey in pizza-making that would see him raising thousands of pounds for good causes and connecting with our local community in the most delicious of ways. 

Going from strength to strength, Jon now runs Community Pizza Events, and if you’re lucky enough to be in Lancaster you can sample his and his team’s mouth-watering produce at the Fairfield Festival on the 13th July 2024, alongside bands, DJs and (this is northern Britain after all) a beer tent. Pet Projects - Episode 4 - Jon Hill

The first of two special episodes loosely based around the craft of writing, Episode 28 of First Impressions features a wide-ranging, relaxed but insightful conversation with Brooklyn-based author Douglas Berman recorded in July. We reflect on what’s changed in the world and in our writing lives since we last spoke for the podcast back in December 2021. 

We also talk about the reading that’s inspired our work, writing techniques (from the epistolary to the horizontal) and while I share excerpts from my new autobiographical short story Countdown (at 07:10 and 21:02) and recently published poem, Anti-algorithm Technique (47:55), Doug reads extracts from the three novels he has been working on, with locations ranging from San Francisco to the Midwest and beyond (at 32:22, 34:51 and 38:16).

Fresh in the mind was my trip to Canada in March 2024. The show opens with a song recorded there with my brother (feat. former guest Mike Teague on guitar) and a trip to an Edmonton rock pub is included in one of my story snippets. Ukraine is also in our thoughts and features in the work and in our chat. A mid-point meander into music past and present is accompanied by some beats and effects (27:06).

First Impressions - Episode 28 - Lasting Impressions (feat. Douglas Berman)

The second of two special episodes based around the craft of writing, Ep. 29 of First Impressions features more chat with Brooklyn-based author Douglas Berman as we turn to travel writing, both of us having lived in the Far East and written about our experiences there to some degree. 

We discuss the risks and benefits of bearing witness to a place as outsiders and how well-known authors like DH Lawrence and George Orwell have fared doing the same, as well as the expectations that come with setting fiction in a particular time and/or place. 

Poetry is also discussed and Doug chooses a travel-related Derek Walcott poem, The Castaway, to share. Within the conversation there is news of the second of my two novels forthcoming on Pine Goat – The Neighbours, a speculative thriller set in a fictional northern town in which a community finds themselves with unanticipated superpowers. I read an extract from The Neighbours at 44:16 while Doug shares his short pieces ‘Taiwan in the New Year’ (13:56) and ‘Iced Sausages’ (21:35) plus a poem of his own (54:12).

First Impressions - Episode 29 - The Writing Journey (feat. Douglas Berman)

For the sixth instalment of Pet Projects, we are chuffed to welcome Ollie and Pixel to the show. As well as being a renowned author of speculative fiction (in the SFF genre), Dr Oliver K. Langmead (aka Ollie) is a Creative Writing tutor at Lancaster University’s world-famous Creative Writing department. 

Ollie describes how he first met Pixel, the importance of play, the shared health problems that saw them taking the same medication, and how ‘yard time’ for cats doesn’t have to mean putting wildlife at risk. 

Turning to publishing, Ollie discusses his research into (de)anthropomorphism and personhood, and his widely praised verse novel Calypso, a stunning piece of sci-fi, created with help from real-life astronauts, his longstanding editor, and literary influences including Milton and Homer. We discuss writing techniques, how to get into ‘the classics’, northern SFF events and publishing scams, among other things.

Pet Projects - Episode 6 - Oliver K. Langmead

For the seventh instalment of Pet Projects – a bumper Christmas special – we are pleased as punch to welcome acclaimed author and Professor of Creative Writing, Jenn Ashworth and her beloved dog Brodie to our show. Originally from Preston and now living in Lancaster, Jenn’s funny, dark and moving work has gained a loyal readership and received widespread praise – in fact the evening before we chatted Chez Lucy her latest novel Ghosted: A Love Story had been recommended on BBC2’s Between the Covers. 

We reflect on that but for the most part sink our teeth into Jenn’s life with Brodie, the process of writing and completing her upcoming book The Parallel Path (out with Hachette in summer 2025), and how her relationship with Brodie, walking across the north of England and her chosen path as a writer helped her come to terms with unexpected illness, burnout and a friend’s diagnosis, all of which came together in her highly anticipated new work. We also cover myths about northernness, letter-writing and how our loved ones, perhaps even without knowing it, can sometimes offer us mentoring in being ill. 

There are also plenty of laughs, tips for animal custodians (and writers), and musical ditties.

Dan Lever is a musician and wordsmith with a passion for communication. Losing his music teaching role during Covid and having lost his appetite for playing, he turned to another of his longstanding passions – writing. He now runs his own business, Magnify Copy, which provides copywriting and digital services to people and organisations whether local to his base in Hest Bank, near Morecambe, or further afield. He has also, happily, picked up his guitar again and performs for the love of it with family, friends and strangers.

Pet Projects - Episode 8 - Dan Lever

For the ninth instalment of Pet Projects we are delighted to welcome artist, cellist and children’s author Margit van der Zwan to the show. Based in Lancashire, Margit was born in the Netherlands but has Hungarian roots through her grandma – and therein lies a link to her distinctive pet: a Magic Roundabout remix who is an expert at shepherding her music students to the piano – as well as putting them at ease. 

In the course of a highly entertaining chat, Margit reflects on some of her adventures – including touring with pop band Elbow, introducing her wonderful picture book ‘I love my maracas!’ to leg-hugging young readers, and learning to play the musical saw (as well as designing a card game) during lockdown. She also looks ahead to her forthcoming art exhibition, ‘All Made Up’, which runs in Clitheroe from 22 February 2025, and we discuss her own unique musical compositions, excerpts of which are included in the show at the following points: ‘Hearts Hearts’ (38:20), ‘The World’ (46:48), ‘White Van’ (01:00:00) and ‘Een Fijne Melodie’ (01:06:50).

Pet Projects - Episode 9 - Margit van der Zwan

This is the 77th Ambient Sessions presented by Deep Electronics. The monthly released session brings you the best and the most diversity Ambient music can offer. This month Ocean in a Bottle makes his debute.

Bio:
Ocean in a Bottle is the solo ambient and drone project from Manchester (UK) based Andy N. 
Ocean in a Bottle was started in 2015, and since 2019 has being following a solitary, imaginary mostly instrumental journey mostly through Space using a mixture of ice sound, vocals and frozen ambient to take the listener through a journey that is unseen before in Space.

Ocean in a Bottle has had releases on labels such Ambient Online, Slightly Off Kilter, Off Records, Persitent Vegetative Records, Silber Media, HICC and Xylem among others.

Andy N is also a poet with four length poetry collections to his name, the most recent being 'The Streets were all we could see' and with his partner Amanda Steel 'The lockdown was all we could see'. 

He also is the host / co host of Podcasts such as Spoken Label, Reading in Bed, Comics Unity, Koll Andy N and Amanda, Wrestle Up and From Inner Room to Outer Space as well as doing a regular column for the Sunday Tribune.

I'm a writer and editor based in Lancaster.
