Valerie Rivera, writing as VA Rivera, is a former New York State elementary school teacher with three decades of experience teaching English and language learners. At age seven she composed her first poem for school—it earned a huge red “VERY GOOD”—and sparked a lifelong love of poetry and teaching.

Now a published children’s author and poet, Valerie writes inspiring picture‑books like I Am Puppy, Kids Read and Write Japanese Haiku and Kids Read and Write Tanka. Episode 67: Chains & Sidekicks

Today on the Pen and the Sword, we kicked off the reboot of our podcast with a focus on collaborative writing and on informal communities of practice like the Military Writers Guild that advance their missions as volunteer-run organizations. 

There is nobody better to discuss those topics than Dr. Nathan Finney. Nate is a historian, a Strategist in the United States Army, and the President of the Military Writers Guild. Nate was the editor of the book “On Strategy”, published by Army University Press, and co-editor with Ty Mayfield of the book “Redefining the Modern Military”. We discussed the challenges of editing a book with multiple authors.

Nate Finney is also one of the founding members of our guild, and since every nerd likes a good origin story, we decided to ask him about that as well.

As a Firebird Book Award winner for my poetry collection This Is Not About Poems, I was invited to share a series of short audio reflections on Firebird Radio—each one offering encouragement and inspiration to fellow writers.

In this 3-minute clip, I speak about how I came to grow into my "poet shoes" (or more accurately, my poet hat) and offer an invitation to all poets listening. Our Sonic Museum project will build an audio collection highlighting the cultural, human, and natural wealth, history, and diversity of communities across North East Fife and the East Neuk – a digital storehouse of land, sea and people stories. The Sonic Museum will allow collaborations with heritage, community groups and arts organisations, encourage community involvement, and allow people to learn new skills, produce podcasts, write, perform and explore their creativity.

Recent funding from the Community Learning and Development Device Fund managed by SCVO has led the charity to develop a new initiative called The Sonic Museum. A field recording lending resource (comprising 12 professional digital field recording kits) allows communities to explore the impact of sound on our lives, capture memories, nature soundscapes, songs and sonic postcards. Four pilots are underway with the Youth Ambassadors affiliated with Balmerino, Gauldry, Kilmany and Logie Community Council, St Andrews Heritage Museum and Garden, and volunteers from Kilmany Parish Hall in the remote village of Rathillet and the Hamlet of Collessie. 

We have also started a collaboration with the Fife Writes Charity, a peer support group for published and unpublished writers. This new collaboration will further enhance the Sonic Museum's content, allowing members to record spoken word, short stories, poetry, and audio plays that bring landscape, history, and heritage to life.

The Pen and the Sword, the podcast of the Military Writers Guild, seeks to examine war and the written word through discussions with service members, veterans, civilian analysts, and writers.

Over a 30-year career, she has scaled the heights of dance music fame and hedonism playing disco, house and techno to huge crowds and in cool underground basements. She is a DJ who is renowned for consistently ‘smashing’ every set she plays. One of two women to have a monthly residency at the Hacienda, she went on to have residencies at Brighton’s Zap Club and London’s Heaven and Ministry of Sound, before serving successful stints in Paris and Ibiza then returning to Manchester to rise again in her birth and spiritual home.  Her second Essential Mix was broadcast on Radio One in February 2023. She is known for her monthly radio shows with Reform Radio, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM and has a Global Residency show produced in collaboration with The Radio Department that can be found on Apple Music. She is a stand-in for AFRODEUTSCHE, Craig Charles and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music. And that’s just for starters.

DJ-wise she has played iconic B2Bs with The Blessed Madonna - closing the massive Homobloc party at Warehouse Project, she wowed the IMS in Ibiza in B2B with Radio 1’s Jaguar, she was a Glastonbury highlight in B2B with Erol Alkan at Stonebridge, closed Sonar By Day in B2B with Stacy ‘Hottwax’ Hale and tore up Draaimolen with IsaBELLA in the summer. She has shone consistently with sets for Womad, Latitude, Watergate in Berlin, Jaiva Glasgow at The Sub Club (Glasgow), Faith, Trade, HeSheThey at Ministry of Sound, Kaiku in Helsinki, Corsica Studios, El Row, San Remo, Stonebridge and Greenpeace at Glastonbury, Bugged Out at Drumsheds , Glitterbox at Hi Ibiza and Defected in Malta amongst many more. And then there’s Beams in London, for Warehouse Project – Glitterbox, Homobloc and Hacienda, in the NYC Downlow, Meatrack and Maceo’s for Block 9 at Glastonbury. Not to mention the Greenpeace ‘Rave Tree’, Beatherder, Brixton Disco Festival, Worldwide Festival in Sete, We Out Here, Mighty Hoopla, Horsemeat Disco in Berlin, Kelburn Garden Party, The National Theatre River Stage, Gilles Peterson’s stage for All Points East,  Manchester and Brighton Pride, Flow Festival in Finland, Homoelectric, Feel It at Omeara and Fatboy Slim’s ‘All Back to Minehead’ weekender with plenty more still to come in 2025!

Aside from that, Paulette is an events and exhibition curator and a regular contributor to radio shows as diverse as Jamz Supernova on 6Music, Radcliffe and Maconie, Afrodeutsche’s ‘The People’s Party’, Craig Charles’ Funk And Soul Show, Amy Lame, Anamatronic’s ‘Dance Devotion’, Eats Everything’s ‘Edible Beats’. She sits on the Regional Committee (North) and Live Events Committee for the Musicians’ Union and is a Power Up mentor for shesaidso.  Her debut book ‘Welcome To The Club: The life and lessons of a black woman DJ’ published in January 2024 by Manchester University Press to huge critical acclaim. Look out for a compilation, a paperback and audio book slated for end April 25.
