For the first Digital Vertigo remix competition of 2014, this is based entirely on Johnny Harris' 'Movements' LP, in particular the first track which is from the film 'Fragment of Fear.' I added the drums from elsewhere and the percussion is from another track off the same album (but also appears in the film). All the dialogue etc. is from the original film trailer. All melodic elements (including the fuzz guitar) are derived from the last 3 bass notes on that first LP track.

As it's just for fun, I figured that downloads should be enabled too. Enjoy.

Pete Sasqwax - What This Button Do?

Ok, so I took a stab fade-out from a record I was supposed to be remixing, pitched it down an octave, pitched it back up 3 notes to make a 2 tone loop and then recorded about 10mins of that to a cassette. I recorded it back into my DAW a few times, each time through a different effect or guitar pedal (the first couple of times it was mainly the DBA Echo Dream 2, the third time it was more or less all using my Minibrute as the filter - hence the title). Why does it change halfway through to another thing? Well, I'd recorded that loop first and when the 10 mins were up and I was still playing with the Minibrute filter, that came on. Seemed to work nicely, so I pitched it down a bit so that it was in key and worked it in there.

For what it's worth, the only stuff on there that didn't originate from the record I was working with is a filtered 808 kick that shows up a couple of times and the drums.

The drums. Yeah - about those. The track does have drums in some parts (if you have enough patience). That wasn't intentional. In fact I more or less swore I wasn't going to use drums and that this was going to be the start of extended forays into beatlessness. Didn't happen. Sue me. I'm a dirtbeat obsessive. Like many a nun has discovered to her chagrin: old habits dye hardly.

By way of a tribute to David Axelrod, all the melodic elements on this track are derived from "A Divine Image" from his 'Songs of Experience' LP. RIP to a singular individual and a true musical genius. 

If you're not familiar with the original track I'd strongly suggest that your time might be better spent listening to that rather than this, but whether you heed that advice is obviously down to you, when all's said and done.

This was for a remix competition. I've always liked the Nosdam gets down so I figured I'd put my flip on it. Nobody cared but then neither did I. I enjoyed it. Contrary to what the track might whisper in your ear, mescalin is mainly bad. Lots of is, anyway.
