My stepbrother Pieter never loved us
any of us so when he brought us these doll radios
we didn't trust him...
but Mary, my sister, 
she swallowed the doll radio
so we had no choice.
We each picked one up and ate it

Mary....felt her throat itch,
feathers pushed out of her skin
and her voice dwindled down to a shriek:
"I'm on fire...I'm on fire....."
I grew thinner and thinner and thinner
I became what I always wanted to be...
a piece of rope.
I slid myself around Pieter's neck and yanked.
"Oh brother of mine, what have you done to us?"
Pieter replies:
"I have given you your heart's desire"
"Oh, oh, oh....oh...oh..oh"
"I have given you everything you want...don't you
want to be what you want to be..your heart's desire...has always been to kill me...
Oh brother of mine, why do you deny what
you are inside....you have always appeared
so calm, so kind, so considerate..your whole
life has been about appearances...but now we
see you as you really are...a very simple creature...a very simple creature....Give me six lines from any man and I will
find something to hang them with....you're a noose"

"No, no," I say, "You are wrong. I am a good person."

Pieter grabbed me by one end and wrapped me around his fist.

"If you are rope, I am the rope charmer…
I will lead you to the things you want to entangle, 
and should you be confused, I will untangle you...and should you love, 
I will tie you to what you love...and should you grow to hate them..
I will loosen you..for what in the world can rope not do?...you have chosen well..
if you have chosen at all...maybe this is just your nature, 
there is nothing to be done about such things..
your nature is stronger than
nurture, your nature leads you round by the nose
to your desire and your desire swallows you whole…
it seems to me that you've never been a man, 
you've always been a rope hiding in a man's body...and now you are free..
the question is...can a parasite live outside a body? 
Can a rope simply be a rope or must a rope always hang a body?
I want to know what you think of this, dear brother."

I said, "I don't know what rope could be without 
something to hold onto, something to tie, 
something to ensnare...something to hold...a rope
is useful..it isn't something that is alive...or has a will.....
it has purpose. I know what my purpose is
and perhaps that is better than being alive…
what do you think, dear brother of mine…
is it my purpose to wrap myself 
around your neck and kill you? 
I cannot be charmed. So come here...come…
to this piece of rope I have become
and show me...show me...."
