Cabrini-Green

Dark Forest is a trippy reverb soaked ode to witches. Inspired by horror films like Robert Egger’s The VVItch, Dark Forest uses theatrical and whispered vocals to create a sense of unease in the listener. When I wrote it I pictured a protagonist walking deeper and deeper into a forest, paranoid that they can whispered voices floating in the wind. As you move deeper into the heart of the forest and civilisation feels further away these voices grow louder and more menacing as the witches begin to circle.

The song was recorded with Mike Bannard at Safehouse studios in Oxford. We focussed a lot of our energy on creating interesting and constantly shifting percussion.

Wondering

Drk Frst (Octavia Freud Remix)

Crows was inspired by a nightmare I had where I was enslaved by a giant Crow. The song is also an allegory for the parts of yourself that you feel compelled to give away in order to survive within the capitalist system. I took additional inspiration from Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” and Park Chan-Wook’s “Decision to Leave” for their portrayals of the perils of upwards mobility and the allure of prosperity.

Crows

On My Beach is meant to feel and sound like the place I go to mentally when I feel depressed. Cut off from everything, not sure how I got there, and a complete certainty that there is no exit. I've learnt to exist in this place and accept it for what it is, and sometimes it even feels like a comfort. I envisage it as some ethereal plane but a literal beach at the same time. The loneliness is less consuming if you take time to listen to the waves.

I Want To Win

Crows is about wanting to escape the corporate and capitalistic world and how we have to surrender parts of ourselves to do that, whilst risking being consumed by it entirely. I had a dream where, I was tricked and brutalised by a crow, and persuaded to ascend a mountain with the promise of release at the summit. The release will never come. I tried to tell that story through this song.
