Dexter’s Lab is the first single from my upcoming debut album 'No to Dread' and was the first song that I wrote specifically for Pet Twin. The name came to me immediately and despite having no correlation to the lyrics I couldn’t bring myself to change it. It just is Dexter’s Lab (after the “omelette du fromage” cartoon, not the serial killer). In the second verse I wanted to create a feeling of being overwhelmed in a crowded room, with a cacophony of voices imploring to tune into their message. I ended up whispering the first line of each track on the album. 

To me Dexter's Lab is about the confusion of going into adulthood and trying balance being the person you want to be with the demands of the world. I've struggled with my self esteem for as long as I can remember and I felt I needed a place to express my opposition to all the warnings about life that you're given by society, however well intentioned. I felt and still do feel fear about pursuing my ambitions so I wanted Dexter's Lab to express that blend of ambition and fear. I wanted it to be a challenge to the notion of failure and the relentless need to be perfect, which only feels amplified by social media. We can learn from and rise up out of our failures. I'd rather try and fail than never try at all. For a long time I'd let my fear stop me from trying, so the song is a critique of my own behaviour as much as it is of society.
