Originally built in 1938, Novachord 346 has proven to be a very special source of raw material for my sample libraries over the years. I recently decided to return to what was the first commercial sample library at the time to capture the beauty of this remarkable instrument and revisit some of the sounds I made shortly after I returned Novacvhord 346 to life back in 2009. This would not have been possible without the help, encouragement and skill of my late friend Stephen Howell known to most as Hollow Sun who I miss dearly...

Following on from the Bleekman album on DMO, another release of all hardware live take recordings in the deeper registers but, this time with a larger, even more Frankenstein setup.

With the mix of budget gear, shite soundcard, recording in a old apartment living room straight to a stereo live mix through a broken old mixer and only having 2 hands, it was hard to keep the recording from falling apart completely, although, that is the fun part.
Nothing really like setting up a few sequences, pressing record and leaving it to the gods.

Recording like this will rarely, if ever sound as good as multi tracking in a DAW and using modern plugins but it captures something different, the total panic and meltdown of trying to manage all the equipment simultaneously and end up with a decent recording sometimes has me laughing and seeing red within a few moments.
In between the chaos there are also moments of quiet as things align or slide into place in way's you may not expect which leaves your thoughts to phase out and disappear while you get to hear a song emerge for the first time

RC-23- Bleekman - The SuperSpectrum EP

To my great relief the now 87 year old 1/4 ton, 163 valve beast came out of a five year long slumber not only without burning the house down but managing to survive a two hour long recording session without even breaking into a sweat.. the 7 rail noise-cancelling high-voltage power supply was barely warm by the end of it - just staggering really if you think about it!

Despite a ton of divider calibration issues and some dodgy tuning I managed to make it through the live recording in one take captured directly from the preamp output into just basic reverb with no delay or modulation effects added and no EQ applied.  A handful of edits and dubs were made mainly to smooth out the flow of things a little.
