Rustam Mansurov is Rusty K, Ryazan, Russia’s drum & bass warrior. He returns with Frozen Heart/End War, his two latest tunes on UK neurofunk giant Close2Death Recordings.  

Rusty has brought d&b, darkstep and hardstep vibes to Bad Taste, Breed 12 Inches and C2D, and continues to deliver the goods wherever he goes, adding an edge and an energy to his sounds. He continues to develop and push the boundaries on Frozen Heart and End War, always searching for the next level, always searching for the perfect beat. Prepare yourselves for the epic soundscapes of the new tunes from Rusty K. 

Frozen Heart straight has to be heard to be believed. Huge operatic vocals open the tune, diving into the stabbing, bleeding synth lead-up. What happens next is truly amazing, with Rusty cutting the tune in half to reveal its very soul. Sharp, electronic neurofunk leads drop in next, with the melody maintained underneath. All of the elements add up to something very special indeed, the type of tune which only comes about once in a while. Tune in, and reevalute what you think music is about, this is how big Frozen Heart is. Your neck will snap, your spine will break, and even the coldest of hearts will wake up to Rusty’s vision of the music. Absolutely huge. 

End War continues the vibe, with another strong piano-based intro. Rusty heaps on the anticipation, drawing things up slowly as he makes you wait for the drop through some military-style drumming, before going absolutely crazy. Things bounce back up quickly, with some massive saw effects dominating later. Rusty has clearly poured his heart and soul into both tunes, displaying his fine talent for putting together and producing tunes of this quality.

Volatile Cycle, a name that is becoming firmly cemented into the upper echelons of cutting edge drum and bass is taking the scene by storm with their take on the darker end of the drum and bass spectrum. Consisting of 2 members, Dan Lawrence and James Chick, they began experimenting individually with genres such as garage and glitch hop and eventually found their niche in drum and bass. The Reaktiv LP is a masterclass in drum and music, showcasing their highly refined technical ability, yet still retaining the classic style reminiscent of the early Hardware days. An endless darkness beckoned ahead, a deep void beyond that held its own gravity, pulled him ahead one paw at a time. Beneath his furry exterior, tucked in the warmth of tightly woven layers of the cotton, the fast beating of his organic heart pulsated nervously, stretching his chest stitches at the seams with its urgency in a constant rhythm. The shadows of the passage flickered in deathly silence over the uniform blackness of his glass bead eyes. Something was out there. He withdrew, sinking into the warm folds of a distant memory – being dropped by his skin companion, and the fuss that followed the soft hairless ones surrounding him with hushed cries, picking him up and dusting him off, holding him close and pressing him back into the fat pink digits of the little one as she kissed him on the eye and promised never to drop him again. The sound of tearing fabric pulled him at once back into the stark reality that faced him, as he looked down in horror at the cotton spilling from his shoulder… his arm slowly tumbling to the floor and landing with a soft and almost noiseless thud against the bleak floor. As he was still registering the beginnings of his own separation, the vast blade swung again – leaving him staggering in his new confusing balance, a furry torso on legs, wobbling unsteadily in the darkness. Then his vision fell forward, he was looking at himself… was that his armless body in front of him? How was it possible? His simple mind was reeling as his head went tumbling toward the floor, spinning as it dropped. The glint of the HELLBLADE caught his eye as his attacker stepped into the light, a hideous body of stacked limbs and rough stitches, cotton spilling out of the seams of its fur… the antithesis of innocence loomed heavily across the dying creature, the glint of his glass eyes faded as the TEDDY KILLER looked coldly upon its meaningless end.
