Monologues boss Ben Gomori has found acclaim far and wide with his official edits of African gems for labels like Sterns Music and Analog Africa (for artists including Orchestra Baobab, Amadou Balake, Oby Onyioha). Here he rounds up four of his reworks of tasty tracks from artists across the Afro-Caribbean spectrum on four edits licensed from the good folk at Mr. Bongo, Soundway Records and Analog Africa.

South African legends Marumo's joyous 'Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae' gets a good juicing, full of triumphant energy, while Black Truth Band's infectious 'Umbala' is stripped back to a slinky, bumping disco groove. An exuberant slice of 1980s Camerooon comes from Emmanuel Kahe Et Jeanette Kemogne on 'Ye Medjuie', where rousing trumpet refrains meet undulating bass funk. Peter Britto's gorgeous lo-fi soca anthem 'I Want Your Love' rounds off the package, its sweet melancholy given an extra bit of energy for maximum dancefloor effect.

Support comes from the likes of Gilles Peterson, The Blessed Madonna, Make A Dance and Tigerbalm.

Kasper Bjørke and Colder's "Black Magic" EP feels both brand new and like a return to something powerful rooted in what came before; post punk attitude, no wave skronk, disco drums and a classic techno pulse. It's heady, cerebral, deeply trippy music for adventurous dance floors. 
The Black Magic Remixes build on everything remarkable about the originals, pushing elements further towards- and away from- the conventions of the club which is the in-between where Throne of Blood loves to play. 
Kicking things off, London-based The Golden Filter (Optimo Records) shoot for the center of the dance floor, building the drama with staccato synths and a broken rhythm awash in dramatically swelling synths and vertiginous delay.
Building on the heady vibes of his recent remix of "In The Morning" by Smagghe &a Cross for Huntley & Palmers, Parisian mastermind Pilooski puts his hands on “Black Magic," building off-kilter harmonics from a mille feuille of analog synths while coaxing a twisted pop sensibility from the original before waves of delays begin dissolving elements to a slow motion drum machine rhythm lurching like a heart palpitation.
Paranoid London's Mutado Pintado rounds out the remixes with an uptempo take on "Black Magic" oozing with attitude. He adds his own vocals atop chopped up sax samples and a heavy four to the floor kick. At the midpoint, oddball vocal samples and a propulsive arpeggiated synth theme carry the song to a sweat-drenched finish.
To complete the package, Bjørke and Colder offer up an instrumental version of "Black Magic" for those moments when vocals would only break the spell.

Bedford Falls Players originally started out as a collective with @djMarkCooper, Terry Farley, Rob Webb and Justin Drake and has regularly featured local DJ's and producers over numerous releases... However, as things have evolved, Mark Cooper has taken the reigns and produces and writes with a more "Cosmic/Nu-Disco" vibe in mind.

The 'Moon EP' on @nightnoisemusic features two original tracks, the gloriously named "Moon - Chapter 1" - Agent Cooper's "Peak" time warm up Mix is followed by the no less impressive "Chapter 3" Agent Cooper's Black Lodge Excursion. 

To add to the impressive package "TiciTaci" Head Honcho, Duncan Gray has remixed 'Chapter 3'.

Then Sinchi favourites and fellow Amsterdammers @Pin-Up-Club  remix  'Moon - Chapter 1'.  A track with a nice flowing build and featuring some of Pin Ups trademark synth work.

Today’s premiere comes by way of London producer G. Markus . Known for his releases on Roots For Bloom and Monologues Records, he has crafted a groovy house sound complete with vocal samples and funky bass lines. This year G. Markus has put out a string of so-called « G-Edits, » including a brilliant edit, of an old disco groover G. Markus picked up at Montreal's very own Disques Beatnik on a trip to the city last year, repurposing the syncopated rhythms for the dancefloor. The producer is back with the third installment in the series, with two tracks that follow suit in soulful grooviness.

The A-side track, ‘Ichiban,’ is an eight minute disco burner with a driving kick and shuffling hi-hats. Bright keys offer a simple chord progression and occasional melodic motifs, leaving space for the complex bass line to take centre stage. A subtle high pass filter anticipates the first vocal sample - “You’re my… play it for me” - which gives way to beautiful sax solo. Around three minutes in the vocal sample returns, this time completing the phrase “You’re my number one DJ,” from which the original song takes its name (‘#1 Dee Jay’ is a single from Goody Goody’s 1978 self-titled LP, and only album). G. Markus treats the song with great care, maintaining the effective dance elements like the bass line and percussion while supplementing the rhythms with melodic samples. The result is a modern disco edit that is free of some of the cheesier aspects of the original.

The flip side contains ‘Power,’ a similarly funky edit that features vocal and guitar samples, while a bassier kick creates a heavier vibe.

That man @gmarkus serves up his third G-Edits vinyl only affair with two slinky disco edits. 'Power' is a funked-up little number full of feel-good vocals, cheeky sax and chunky bass grooves. Enjoy it.

Nicolas Jaar - "What My Last Girl Put Me Through"

Phantasm is a new vinyl label and collaboration between Amsterdam's Sinchi Collective and the much-admired Night Noise outlet, based in Geneva. It kicks off with a strong EP from The Soviet Union aka Richard Baldwin, including classy remixes from Sinchi themselves and In Flagranti. Baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. A fine DJ, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, Richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. This track was first written on a cold evening in December 2010 using a Roland TR707 and JX8P Synth. After collaborating with his songwriting partner the track was given a haunting vocal and released as ‘The Disappearance of Becky Sharp’, while the original remained on Baldwin’s Soundcloud and got ID requests from all over the world. 7 years later it comes back to life in the form of its original instrumental, with a 2017 rework, plus remixes by Sinchi and In Flagranti. In Flagranti—the Codek Records duo based in Switzerland and Paris—then lace in some hip swinging claps and make this one a deep disco track that is riddled with little synths, chords and melodies that exude warmth and sci-fi soul. Last of all, Amsterdam’s Sinchi cook up a storm with corrugated basslines, long tailed pads and turbulent solar winds that make it that bit darker and moodier. Hip hop’s influence has permeated territories far removed from its Bronx origins, spawning creative and surprising fusions that strengthen the art form’s global reach. Case in point: Anton Ivanchenko, residing in the southwestern Siberian city of Omsk, has been obsessed with funk, hip-hop, and b-boy culture since the ‘90s. Presently, he’s been channeling this obsession into his exciting project LTF (Light The Fuse). Aided by deft skills on turntables, acoustic bass, and digital sampler LTF has produced a handful of sublime 7” singles. Now he’s turned to The Content Label to reveal his debut full-length album, Jazz Echo. 

Jazz Echo simmers with the bebop attitude of its namesake, brimming with heavy bass riffs, crucial breakbeats, truncated vinyl exclamations, and an adept ear for melody. The ‘echo’ could be the time travel partaken with the album’s disparate sound sources. With fastidious regional crate-digging, LTF discovered many obscurities for his samples and constructions. “You search for the records and listen to them all day,” LTF explains. “And then you find yourself not listening to the music, but you’re listening to the musicians separated from one another. The more you listen, the more greedy you become for the sound that was born to be found and reimagined. That’s the trip. And this trip flows through the jazz records of Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe.” 

Among Jazz Echo’s many highlights is “Ritual,” showcasing LTF’s contrabass prowess and an arrangement that confidently sits beside the ‘70s jazz-funk classics. There’s “Spacebop,” combining a vintage sound with modern production techniques and the flutterings of a dusty Soviet-era synthesizer. A cosmic interpretation of the ‘quiet storm,’ played over some serious beats, manifests in “Meteo,” while “Release Your Reflection” fills every available sonic space with orchestral flourishes, heavy drums, and a helping of space echo and mind-expanding effects. 

LTF’s Jazz Echo is released on The Content Label on vinyl and digital formats. Original artwork and design are by Lautaro Pesano and the project is executive produced by Dday One.

Ben Gomori, label head of Monologues Records and Stern Edits, might be one of the busiest men in the industry today. When he's not providing us with the freshest dance music through his two labels, Ben can be seen spending his "leisurely" time hosting podcasts, radio shows, and video series like Turned On, Monologues and RecordReplay. If that wasn't enough, Ben puts on club night fundraisers for Help Refugees and the highly esteemed album listening sessions Pitchblack Playback. We honestly do not know where the man finds the time, but he does.

Given his absurd work rate, we were not surprised to learn back in July that Ben Gomori also produces under the previously anonymous moniker G. Markus. Mr. Gomori's reasoning for starting the project was "[...] to make deeper, freakier, trackier stuff than I was known for under my own name. It was a breath of fresh air starting from a blank canvas and sending music to labels anonymously with no preconceptions, having no social media and so on."

Whether he's releasing music under his own name or G. Markus, one can argue that Ben has a knack for making edits that rivals any of his contemporaries today. And this unique skill is on full display throughout his latest track titled "Red E," in which he takes on an 80's classic. Using the infectious vocal sample as a centerpiece, Ben chooses to pair it with an equally catchy assortment of lively piano house melodies and cheeky synths that are reminiscent of greats like Kerri Chandler.

A surefire way to start any party, DJs and producers alike would be negligent by not adding this chune to their collection. "Red E" along with "Cum Thru" are out today! Get your copy now!
