In this episode, Jeremy and Jessica speak with Dr. Shane Desselle, RPh, PhD, FAPhA from Touro University California College of Pharmacy and Dr. Kenneth Hohmeier, Pharm.D. from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy about their ongoing research in pharmacy technician workforce issues. 

As more and more attention is being paid to the work pharmacy technicians do, and the instant change in scope of practice brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Drs. Desselle and Hohmeier’s work is particularly apropos.  They discuss their published paper, “Exploring the implementation of a novel optimizing care model in the community pharmacy setting,” for which they were awarded the 2020 Wiederholt Prize by the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association. 

The paper explores the positive impact technician product verification can have on enhancing patient care delivery, as well as successes and concerns with implementing such a model.

Christina Delsoldato, wife and mom of 3 beautiful children has spent most of her life laughing and loving as much as she can. Christina has built a successful professional career in hospitality, customer service and sales. Christina has faced many obstacles and traumatic events during her life. Christina took her mother’s quickly declining health into her own hands. Despite having no clinical and medical background, she spent countless nights reading, learning and researching to find answers.

These efforts and findings are what allowed her beloved mother to come home to spend her last days on earth surrounded with the love and support of her closest family. Since her mother’s diagnosis with Pancreatic Cancer and 5FU toxicity, Christina has become determined to help guide others to self-educate, research and ask questions about potential life-threatening side effects that could indeed be prevented and/or reversed.

Tragically, only three months after her mom passed away, her father died suddenly. Christina is on a mission to empathize and advocate not just for her family, but for anyone in need.

Today's Pharmacy Future Leaders interview is with the entreprenurial blogger Dr.&nbsp;Madeline Acquilano&nbsp;PharmD&nbsp;The Luxe Pharmacist Madeline is in her&nbsp;sixth (P4) year of pharmacy school&nbsp;in Boston, Massachusetts. Madeline states: "I grew up in a small town in beautiful, woodsy New Hampshire. My father had the pleasure (and challenge) of raising three daughters, after growing up in a household with four brothers. Needless to say, as girly as I am now, that was not always the case. I grew up in the woods on our ATV trails; hiking mountains, going on bike rides, and was enrolled in sports my first year of elementary school. I may not have become the star athlete that my father had wanted, but rest assured his efforts did not go to waste. He made me tough; he showed me how to work hard and to never take no for an answer. Ultimately, he showed me how to be a role model to others by being one himself. Fast forward to now many years later; I can attribute much of my success in pharmacy school to those same principles. It has always been my dream to inspire others, especially women, being that I am the oldest, and have two little sisters that look up to me. I believe all women should feel empowered and inspired, not only to go after their dreams (whatever those may be), but to also be a positive role model for other women and our society. I have grown so much over the past five years of pharmacy school.
