Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits. When she’s behind the decks, even her biggest fans often have no idea exactly what she’s playing, and that’s part of the magic. Like all DJs, Willikens of course has a passion for records, but she’s also after something bigger, something that’s truly transportive for those on the dancefloor.

Born and raised in Germany, Willikens first honed her unique approach during a long residency at Düsseldorf’s beloved Salon des Amateurs. These days, however, she’s based in Amsterdam, where her transportative impulses have been plugged into a variety of outlets with a global reach. On the radio, she pilots the monthly Lightning Conductor program on NTS. On record, she recently curated the fifth installment of Dekmantel’s acclaimed Selectors compilation series, and she’s also been tapped to remix the likes of Lena Platonos, S U R V I V E, rRoxymore, Simian Mobile Disco and Ana Helder, amongst others. On stage, Willikens works with artist Sarah Szczesny on Phantom Kino Ballett, an immersive audio-visual performance art project that defies routine explanation.

Still, it’s in the DJ booth where Willikens continues to make the biggest impact. Whether she’s playing alone or in tandem with fellow sonic explorer and Salon des Amateurs alum Vladimir Ivkovic, Willikens nimbly navigates electronic music’s darkest and most bizarre corners, sampling different temperatures, different moods and a dollop of chaos, just to keep things interesting. And although she herself doesn’t always know the final destination, when Willikens is at the helm, there’s no question that the journey is bound to be thrilling.

@okodj : A set recorded for La Fête de la Musique event of Oddity Radio, without knowing in advance that it was going to be recorded and published afterwards, which I have liked! This allowed me to play without having the "post live" experience in mind, so it's really honest and raw. The energy was super nice and I have reconnected with a lot of parisian friends at this party !

Musically it's a compilation of my summer favourites, including a bunch of very different genres as always : post punk, sexy house, industrial, amapiano, you name it !

OKO DJ - Oddity Influence Mix

We are very happy to have a new Phase Group mix to share with you thanks to Jazz from Australia. 

Jazz lives in Naarm where she hosts the weekly Spaces Within Space radio shows every Sunday night at midnight on PBS 106.7 fm. Her radio shows and mixes  showcase an amazing selection and ability to blend varying textures, tempos and soundscapes that comes with a deep knowledge of electronic music. She's an in demand DJ in Naarm regularly playing in clubs around the city whilst working hard to push the local scene and she also recently released her first original music on @phenomenarecords in the form 'Subtype' a brilliant half-tempo, dubbed out, percussive, psychedelic acid/idm track that she produced in collaboration with Georgia bird.

Her mix for us moves through those same psychic, cerebral and echoing spaces, taking in downtempo acid, dark idm, lofi drum machine jams and  slow trance atmospheres.

Having originally come across shjva through their self-released album, zemlia (https://shjva.bandcamp.com/album/zemlia), the scale of her influence began to unravel. They run https://soundcloud.com/penumbrum, a label/crew with a strong community ethos and a taste for deep, rippled, acidic sounds with an old school flavour. Their band, PLAN, is soon to release their second album on the label.

This mix carries with it plenty of drama :O ..... Recorded in a field during the day, clouds began to balloon and the wind whipped up. Soon, dancers were holding onto the tent to keep the equipment dry as lightning cracked all around them. Eventually, all electricity was cut to the area!!!

Not that you would know listening to this mix, which wanders through shimmering, livewire electronics and full, dubby shades of contemporary downtempo. shjva's ear for idle minimalism and subtle sound design weaves an abstract landscape.  Tracks bend and morph like lights in a rain puddle. Small changes in elements create a full-scale energetic ripple effect, from a cerebral, textured hypnosis at the centre, to a flowing, smooth muscularity on the outer. Neurosis and careless motion link arms, swing and smile.
