This set was recorded opening the Zerotonine party of the 30th of december  '23 in my hometown Barcelona. Was the first time I opened a club party with my other favorite subgenre which is Soulful / Liquid Funk, the vibes were amazing and I really enjoyed it. Sadly this is not quite common to do but Soulful is probably the most rich and melodic subgenre of them all and that's why I love it. As I said before, and I repeat, Dancefloor is my day by day, but Soulful is my once in a lifetime.

I'm really happy about the result of this set despite some minor mistakes for the whole hour, you'll find doubles and some triple drops even mixing in a very subtile way, so you'll probably end up listening some tunes you may know which sound quite different!

Thank you for all the people who has been supporting me and my projects, the people who came to see me that day and the rest of gigs, the support I received for this last year which exceeded my expectations by far METHOD, Lexurus, Debice, Simulate, Rezilient, Synchronic, Fin Jones, Lekke Band, Simple Souls, T & Sugah my partners in crime Mr.Marble, NoRelay, Teravito, all my friends, the people from the scene of Barcelona and Catalonia in general, the people from abroad which left me messages and support and have been here since day 1. In this pilot episode, I sit down and waffle on about who I am, some stuff about me you may not know, my upbringing and the good, bad and ugly times the last 9 years of me trying to break into the drum and bass scene. 

This episode acts as a taster of what I am trying to make of this thing... real conversations, real understanding, real talk. I want to bring to the forefront, the backstories of our favourite dj's, producers, label owners and some unsung heroes. Between The Beats.. we're still human.

In the seventh instalment of the 'Between the Beats' podcast series, I got the honour of chatting with the 1985 label manager, Amy Jayne.

Amy knows the drum and bass business world like the back of her hand. A graduate in photography who had a love for dubstep and drum and bass - she never imagined the career she would go on to have within the scene.

It's as if she has done it all, working for Hospital Records, Shogun Audio, now the label manager for 1985 and helping many artists set up their own labels and handle self-releases. She is the definition of a "Drum and Bass consultant" - her knowledge and experience of how the industry works is something that really shines bright.

This conversation between us is a story of hard work and teaches us that knowledge is power (as is the will to obtain it!) I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to interview Amy and hope you all enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed speaking with her!

Between the Beats EP 7. Amy Jayne (1985 Music)

In my 8th interview this year (mad)... I got to speak with the amazing Whisky Kicks. A wonderful full-circle moment for me, having been interviewed myself by Nicola earlier in the year for UKF's Label Spotlight series. Nicola is the editor of UKF, a freelance journalist, bass music enthusiast, a mother and still very much a raver at heart. 

Not only is she inspiring, but she is also fun, supportive of the scene, approachable, relatable and fiercely clever. A woman who stopped at nothing to be a trailblazer for others in the journalist sphere. 

We discuss the importance of building healthy relationships between artists and the press,  what makes someone worth shouting about and her journey from Croydon dubstep raver to editor at UKF. We dissect the feeling of imposter syndrome and why it can be a superpower when you're coming up in a highly competitive industry. And we talk very passionately about a mutual love of underground music (her kids lullaby music was Burial!)

Speaking to Whisky felt incredibly easy and comfortable, for me, this one feels really wholesome!

Between the Beats EP 8. Whisky Kicks (UKF)

It’s our final podcast of 2024, and I’m incredibly honored to share my conversation with Pythius – one of the most influential figures in the Neurofunk scene. Hylke has witnessed firsthand the rise of drum and bass in the Netherlands, and his journey mirrors the growth of the genre itself.

What I especially love about this chat is how it almost transcends the format of a typical interview. At one point, I threw out my planned questions, and the conversation naturally evolved into a deep dive into his music, creative process, and personal story within drum and bass. From discovering the genre while just hanging out with friends in the park, discovering really intimate underground raves, to his time as a Blackout intern, and eventually scoring the Let It Roll festival – Pythius’s journey is truly captivating.

One of the highlights for me was learning about the Dutch drum and bass scene. As a UK native, it’s not often that we get to hear about how the scene developed in other countries. It was like a mini history lesson, covering the early days of iconic brands like Cheeky Monday and Liquicity.

I’m beyond grateful to Hylke for taking the time to speak with me and for being so open about his journey and his music. I really hope you all enjoy this one – it’s a special one to close out the year.

Between the Beats EP 9. Pythius

Well well well.. episode 10! Into the double figures for Between the Beats! Huge love to everyone who has supported the podcast so far and listened! In this episode I sit down with Trex.

Why do I love this chat between us so much? Honestly, Trex is just super chill. The more we spoke, the more I could really just feel the human element of our conversation. He's just a regular person, like all of us. What really shines through with him, which resonates with me super strongly... is how much this guy loves the music and how much Drum and Bass really has been THE THING in his life. As well as his family and raising his children.

Trust Audio, his view on remix's, his musical relationship with T>I, Patreon, keeping focused, being grateful... we go through it all in such a calm and casual tone. His mindset and his approach combined with a very evident love of the music and a huge respect for the long grind and getting the timing right... inspiring to be honest! (Not to mention its something we can all learn from as well!

Between the Beats EP 10. Trex

Real treat in store for Episode 11 of Between the Beats (and my 10th interview…wooop!!)

Phil Fokus, or MC Fokus is the first MC I get to speak with on my podcast. This came about super organically when Phil hit me up saying he had been enjoying listening to some previous episodes. Other than being a huge fan of his music and how he narrates the underground.. I’ve held MC Fokus and his wisdom in high regard.

We speak in depth about self confidence, keeping the spirit healthy and happy and what does it mean to have true fulfilment both in ones music career, but in life as a whole. This is the sort of conversation that can really inspire and teach everyone, not just somebody within the music industry. I feel like we challenge each other to be self reflective and maybe even quite vulnerable in this conversation and I hope this encourages some of you to do the same within yourselves!

We went deep, yes, but we also discussed the state of Drum and Bass, the power of the Underground scene and the feeling of hunger that’s running through it at the moment. But we also talked about the fact it needs support and some ways in which that can be done. We discussed the many cycles of mindset and intention and how it affects your mental well being, and as a result, how you feel about your music and trajectory. My favourite part… is when we speak about the notion of ‘One Scene.’

AHHHH honestly, I really love this one! Big up Fokus – I needed that!

German born, Viennese based Paul SG steps up for SUNANDBASS Podcast #55, alongside America’s T.R.A.C and the legendary MC Conrad. 

Fresh from releasing his debut LP ‘This Is Me’ on his own label ‘Jazzsticks Recordings’, which once again showed the world clearly what he stands for musically and all the influences he likes to draw into his work, this podcast serves to put all of this into a mix format and give a lovely view into Paul’s current musical sphere. 

Incorporating tracks with Jazz, Soul, Motown influences, and more, the mix neatly weaves together all of these flavours in a tight yet danceable fashion, and with the excellent addition of MC Conrad and T.R.A.C hosting the set, this one will take you up to the sky blue stratosphere!

EQ50 Special hosted by MIMF

It has only been a little more than a year, but it feels like another era since DJ Flight held the EQ50 talk for us on a sunny September day in La Cinta Beach Bar. Aren’t you curious what happened to everyone? Digging deep into how the community will respond to the urgent call for equality further sparked by the blacklivesmatter movement, but also how including and encouraging of equality can be displayed in a COVID world swept void of gigs. What are future plans and has anyone had space for creativity while major life changing events happened nonetheless? DJ Flight brought us an update with Chickaboo, Reid Speed, Philo, Sweetpea, Mantra and Alleycat, and a big thank you to all these artists for taking part. Now, go and grab some of these yummy Christmas cookies and a hot chocolate, listen and enjoy.

Finally, what can we say about 2020? Apart from souls lost and dreams shattered, we‘ve learned a lot of lessons this year. To honour what we have lost means to make every day count. Let’s build on it and join forces to create a happier and better place. There were so many people volunteering and ready to help selflessly, raising money through music for charity. A lot of virtual events were inclusive and showed how successful and colourful we’d be if we leave no-one behind. Whatever the future is going to be, it is in our hands to write a happy ending and share love, trust and respect. It may be hard to predict where the world is going in 2021, but let's not sit around and wait for something to happen. This year, we will bring on the SUNANDBASS monthly podcasts, interesting talks, label releases and make new dreams come true. We hope this is a year where we can all create new things and continue to push through these difficult times together.
