Balearic Headspace Compilation - Volume Tres - Yam Who? Teaser Mix

Keith O’Hanlon was a genuine lover of music, a great friend to all and generally one of the best guys you could meet. He always had time for people and he always had an opinion to share. Sometimes he wasn’t cheeky. 

We only played with Keith a few times on his excellent boat parties and club nights in Galway which he did as part of the legendary The Disconauts, but it was always the best of fun and a trip from the airport in Keith’s car with his gear stick chewed to pieces by his faithful hound was never anything but the best entertainment as he gave you the lowdown on pretty much everything.

Tragically Keith recently left us. 

It has been a massive shock to so many and the outpouring of love and thanks from people all around the world as well as locally was deeply touching. 

The effects were of course felt most hard by those closest and dearest to him. The Irish DJ scene of which Keith was a major part for decades is an example to all as it embodies a sense of sharing and long term friendship which is sadly lacking in some places. Everyone was totally devastated.

But as the tributes to Keith poured in from around the world it was obvious just how many people Keith had touched with his personality and how many people had shared the good times and special moments with him because of his passion for music.

Recently a number of his closest friends Padraic O’Connor and Martin and Daz from Get Down Edits shared a night together in one of Keith’s favourite haunts The Bluenote in Galway. All extremely fine DJs it was a very special occasion and again another touching tribute to the special guy Keith was. The night was recorded and we are proud and honoured to share it here where Keith deserves to be and for you all to celebrate the life of one of the good guys, a very great DJ and a friend.

We want to thank you Keith for all you did for so many and for music.

RIP.

"Café Mambo celebrates 15 years and 5475 Sunsets with a special musical tribute from the man who started it all, José Padilla.

Every year as the summer officially kicks in we see the release of a whole bunch of compilations claiming to embody the (true) musical spirit of Ibiza. There is a very small handful of DJs that could actually claim this accolade with complete integrity; they include in their number legendary DJs such as Alfredo, DJ Pippi, Jon Sa Trinxa, Pete Gooding and the man credited for creating the whole down tempo, deep, chill out sound himself, José Padilla.

This is a man who has been a leading musical figure on the White Island for over 30 years, adding that little bit of extra tranquility to this magical destination and giving birth to the internationally renowned Café del Mar series back in 1995. It was this series that cemented his position as the leader of contemplative chill-out vibes, a genre that has seen him now become its ultimate authority.

So it is not surprising that he has been invited to curate the anniversary compilation for a venue that has been at the center of Ibizan club and beach culture for 15 years, Café Mambo. For those of you that have never been, seen or heard of Café Mambo, it is the iconic and award-winning café and beach bar that sits in the centre of what has become known as the Sunset Strip in San Antonio. It was established in 1994 by Javier Anadon and it has become a prevailing force in the dance music industry touching down for its annual Balearic odyssey.

Every night during the summer you will find the world’s biggest international DJs playing warm up sets after sundown. Mambo has even grown to become the home of BBC Radio 1’s Ibiza Weekend broadcast every summer.

But it’s the incredible spectacle of the sunset that sets this place apart from any other. The Ibizan sunset has been serenaded for centuries but never as seductively as at Café Mambo; having a mojito and slowly watching the sun disappear into the Med is what the experience is all about.

Jose Padilla has put together a selection of exquisite Balearic moments to facilitate and eek out the maximum chill potential in the above experience. The album is a spacey, beautiful album for sunset seekers. With some rare inclusions including Amycanbe '24 Hours', a laid back track which José boasts he could listen to for ever, as well as more upbeat dance moments like Sis n' Jones feat. Isac 'Jami' (Main Vocal Mix), which again is singled out as a standout track by José himself.

All in all this is an essential addition to your summer listening selection."

It’s difficult to come up with fresh ideas in this strange cabin fever environment we all have right now. Most of the time I take my inspiration and my ideas from the people dancing in front of me. It’s easy that way and exciting. But tonight I had this thought, I remembered something all DJs and dancers know about. I remembered what it is like when you have had a long set or session through the night or day. Or perhaps for a few days at a festival. And then at a certain point you are playing or dancing and everyone who is there wants to be there. This is the place. This is the time. It maybe isn’t the best gig or moment in your career or life. But for that precious period of time it is just you and the people on the dance floor. You are together as one and as a DJ you can do what you want because you are united in the music. This is often a great time to drop the tempo and play the music you love and which has real feeling. I love those moments. I tried to capture them tonight stuck in a studio on my own. Since the 1990s, Phat Phil Cooper has been on a journey through DJ culture and electronic music with more twists and turns than your average million-selling novel. Through his work as a DJ, label manager, curator, record shop owner, event organizer and music consultant, Cooper has remained a central figure in a story that has yet to reach a conclusion.

Musically, Cooper has long been celebrated for his diverse approach to music. While naturally at home championing the seductive, sun-kissed sounds released on the NuNorthern Soul label he founded in 2012 – either in humid outdoor venues around the Globe or via his popular weekly radio shows and regular sessions on Mixcloud – Cooper’s roots can be traced back to the dancefloors of legendary Liverpool club Cream, where during the 1990s and early 2000s he was a key resident DJ. 

Three decades on, Cooper’s club-moving skills remain as sharp as ever, despite his reputation as a storied, laidback and open-minded downtempo selector.
