Los Angeles native Lawrence Grey explores the aesthetics of decay. His debut LP, "Rust," reflects the darker, decrepit sides of LA. "Rust" is a record for LA’s run-down warehouses more than for the Hollywood clubs. Influenced by William Basinski’s "The Disintegration Loops", Lawrence became obsessed with tape degradation. By soaking tapes in starch and leaving them outside for weeks, he altered the sounds they held on a physical level, developing an organic sound of his own. Digging into raw, earthen textures and building off the energy and inventive rhythmic work in his first EP, "Claustrophilia," "Rust" stands out in the often homogenous field of electronic music. Further inspired by the sonic results of his tape degradation, Lawrence applied the same practices to 16mm film and slide photos to create all of the art for the record.

While technology pulls people away from the dirt and danger of the natural world, Lawrence uses it as a way to connect with the primitive. He combines the organic with the digital through the manipulation and exploitation of analog recording technology. As the world heats up and its buildings crumble, Lawrence will continue to find beauty in the ruin.
