FADING FOOTSTEPS

I heard them every night
for a while.

Same rhythm.
Same pause on the third step,
like whoever it was needed a second
to decide whether to keep going.

The house never looked toward the sound.
It just let it pass.

At first, the footsteps stayed close —
hallway distance,
close enough to count.
I told myself it was pipes,
old wood remembering weight.

Then they started moving farther away.
Stairs I don’t remember building.
Rooms that didn’t used to be there.

I tried standing still,
holding my breath,
like I could catch the moment
they chose to fade.

One night,
I didn’t hear them at all.

That was worse.

Because silence doesn’t mean gone.
It means whatever was walking
learned how to leave
without being noticed.

Sometimes,
when I’m almost asleep,
I feel the floor settle —
just enough to remind me
I’m the one still here.

Yo Grapes is a Johannesburg based indie-pop act created by Craig Durrant the drummer for Desmond and the Tutus. Grapes' debut single "Nice Outside" received great reviews & 2nd single "Holiday" was featured by popular New York blog ‘Cool Hunting’ on their annual playlist. In 2013 Yo Grapes released a DIY album (Grape Juice) of songs recorded every week for 11 straight weeks. The album was then released in Japan by Flake Records in Osaka. The single "December" received great support in Japan & SA.
