Groceries recently moved to Montreal from Halifax. As a DJ, she explores experimental club sounds across genres. She also has a podcast exploring the history and philosophy of dance music culture.

What kind of experience or feeling were you aiming for the listener to have?

This mix is kind of grimy and dirty and sneaky. Most of the timbres aren’t clean or smooth or polished. They leave a gritty residue in your ears. Know what I mean? 

There are a lot of experimental sounds, but there are also a lot of vocals to ground the listener, including some pop samples. I forget where but I read an interview with Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones about the strategy of organizing their visual productions around the relatability of the human form. If you saw their performance in the dome at the SAT during Mutek last year you’ll understand. The world they create has potential to be alienating, it’s gross and weird and texturally almost gory at times. But organizing it around the human form makes it more engaging and understandable. I think vocals do the same thing in electronic music.
