When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

Metrik’s highly anticipated second album ‘LIFE/THRILLS’ released on Hospital Records is an exhilarating and flawlessly executed evolution of his signature sound. ‘Electric Echo’, a collaboration with Fightstar’s Dan Haigh and Alex Westaway’s synthwave side project Gunship, encapsulates the ethos of the album merging the unfamiliar with D&B sensibilities to create a fresh and exciting new sound. We also welcome the return of Elisabeth Troy in 'Chasing Sunrise' and Reija Lee in 'Cadence' making for two powerful vocal highlights on the record. If Technique’s Spanish connection have flown under your radar so far, here’s your chance to catch up. Now, as the rest of us know, they might be drawing from neuro and tech influences, but producers Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, aka Gradual, have been quietly and methodically evolving their own formula. Not only does this three track EP represent some of Gradual’s most individual and technically advanced work to date but, crucially, it’s free!

First up is Ignis. Right from the intro, Gradual show that they’re creating a template all of their own. They’ve got that tech-sensibility in there, as percussive elements develop and morph. But the strings and chord changes add a touch of euphoria to proceedings. Then the drop, made from a grimy sub, a popping two-step rhythm and sparsely paranoid synth modulations, is tinted with colours straight from the neuro palette. All that, plus the skankers paradise half-time section in the second drop show that these producers are refusing to stay pigeon-holed.

Penguins harks back to the funky techstep we were used to around the turn of the millennium. As the groove emerges from a cloud of reverb, it becomes clear that catchy hooks aren’t just the preserve of jump-up. That militant synth line in the top-end is going to get right inside our minds and stay there. When that’s combined with the precision-tooled drums and speaker-rupturing jabs of bass, this is set to do serious dancefloor damage.

Finally, Space Law comes into effect. This one’s, quite simply, dangerous. The moment you hit play, it’s already building, with synth-pizzicato and rolling toms warning us of the tactical nuke that’s coming. When the kick-build adds it’s weight, the ravers better get set to go in hard. The drop strikes with tectonic sweeps of bass that rip through the low-end and mid-range, supported by those glisteningly-clean drums we’ve come to expect from Gradual. It’s dancefloor technique in action.

So, don’t be fooled by the price tag. It might not cost any money, but there’s nothing cheap about this release. These tunes are mature, assured pieces of D&B production that are bound to cement this duo’s reputation. Better get ready to see a lot more of Gradual in 2017.
