Julian Anderson (*1967) is a pivotal figure in modern British music. As a composer who “renews the power of music as an evocation of community” (Bayan Northcott, New Grove Dictionary) his works are equally accessible, challenging, intellectually stimulating and radiantly beautiful. One of Anderson's central works, Book of Hours for ensemble and electronics, a haunting evocation of medieval art, uses electronics as an extra instrumental colour like gold leaf in a manuscript. Scherzo (with Trains), written for the unusual combination of four clarinets, reveals the composer's humorous side.
