Interplay: Classical with Electronics

Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling master Samuli Kosminen joined forces with Kronos Quartet on the project Uniko featuring music composed by the duo. Kosminen samples Pohjonen’s accordion and Kronos’ strings and reproduces them into the mix via his electronic drum pads and devices.

Julian Anderson (*1967) is a pivotal figure in modern British music. As a composer who “renews the power of music as an evocation of community” (Bayan Northcott, New Grove Dictionary) his works are equally accessible, challenging, intellectually stimulating and radiantly beautiful. One of Anderson's central works, Book of Hours for ensemble and electronics, a haunting evocation of medieval art, uses electronics as an extra instrumental colour like gold leaf in a manuscript. Scherzo (with Trains), written for the unusual combination of four clarinets, reveals the composer's humorous side.

"Keep It Close To Me” appears on Yoncalla, the debut album by Yumi Zouma.

Where Yumi Zouma’s previous EPs were created in isolation, capturing the nuances of each member’s life half a world away, Yoncalla was given a singular voice. “Yumi Zouma has always been an exercise in refining ideas and collaborating,” reflects guitarist Charlie Ryder, “but this was the first time we weren’t limited or protected by distance. With Yoncalla, the process was different, and it can be scary to present raw ideas to your friends ‐ but it’s also incredible to see songs evolve through the sparks of inspiration that bounce between people in the same room.” That intimacy is apparent on Yoncalla ‐ an album about being close to people, rather than miles apart. Yumi Zouma’s effortless waves of harmony have been redefined and the creative process laid bare to expose an act more unguarded and interconnected than ever before. 

To capture the concepts on Yoncalla, New Zealand visual artist Henrietta Harris was tapped to create the cover art, illustrating the band together on a front cover for the first time.

The Philharmonia has been resident at Southbank Centre since 1995 and presents a Season of over 50 performances each year. Orchestral programming is complemented by series including Philharmonia at the Movies, Music of Today, the Philharmonia Chamber Players and an Insights Talks programme.
