“What is Grimstone?” Balkins muses. Recently released after a 10-month incarceration, the rock drummer wants to talk, but not about his arrest and conviction.

“No man. Now is not the time.”

What it is time for is music. Music and beer. Music, beer, and sex.

“I guess Grimstone could be a bleak foundation for something bigger than I can adequately explain,” he continues. “Maybe it’s a really bad erection.”

And that’s how it typically goes whenever a member of Mr. Grimstone is asked about their mission and craft—ambiguity. They know what they are doing.

Mr. Grimstone happened when God wanted it to happen, even if the Philadelphia music scene wasn’t.

“Everything fell into place.” Nez, the group’s guitarist, offers something of a timeline for the band. “Gonz and I tired of being longshoremen. And we just couldn’t keep getting sick from the women who had come to work in those areas.” He pauses. Then, with an impish shrug, adds, “We have our vices.”

“I quit. Stayed away from the women. Bought a guitar. Hit the weights. Started writing songs to let go of the demons.” That’s Gonz. The band’s towering centerpiece. As the youngest member, he brings a youthful (yet nuanced) approach to the outfit’s songs. “I bring in the chords and the words, and the boys bring the violence. That is how we create songs.”

Bill? 

Balkins speaks first. “I’ll tell you all about my time in prison!”

“He just became unreliable,” Nez explains. “Look. We all enjoy our debauchery, but he took it too far one gig. Couldn’t play a single note.”

When I tried to track Bill down, I was met with denial and innuendo. My best sources were only able to confirm that he has been working on a hog farm in Indonesia. (Other reports had him performing solo performances to rally ISIS-K in Afghanistan.)

The band’s future was in doubt. Until veteran bassist Richard “The Villain” got the ship out of the irons. “I knew I could bring them places. They had the material and an incredible work ethic. And we all love beer.”

Mr. Grimstone will be touring in the Spring of 2022.
