Serendipity is a wonderful thing, and when we looked ahead in the guestmix calendar, a certain number jumped out. 303. A number synonymous with the roots of house music, which presented itself with a (somewhat obvious) opportunity to get an old friend into the series... a man who saw it all unfold before his very eyes in the 90's, and who himself excels with the execution of mixes with an underlying concept. 

Welcome to JD Twitch's ode to the Roland 303.

"The Roland 303 is a little silver box of electronics that accidentally produced the squelching sound that became the foundation of Acid House. Pioneered circa 1987 in Chicago, Acid House exploded around the world and that sound spread through electronic music creating myriad variants.

Fundamentally the 303 is instantly recognisable by its squelch sound. This squelch can be euphoric, hypnotic, joyous, uplifting, sad, dark, cheesy, silly, scary, ridiculous, psychedelic, beautiful and anthemic. This mix aims to showcase many of these shades of the squelch. It is not the greatest hits of the 303, nor is it a collection of wilfully obscure forgotten 303 jams, it's just simply a paean to the majesty and never ending sonic possibilities of the squelch. Captured on the 22.03.25 at Doka (Amstersdam), which has a very DJ comfortable booth. Play time was from around 3am-6ish.

This live recording is my first in at least 5 years - I’ve always struggled with the concept of DJing without a crowd/dance-floor so for my usual mix output I “record” in Ableton. I also enjoy “mixing” on the sofa as horizontal as possible so go figure.

We're not talking about rabid hip hop completist shit, or pointless house classics on 7" or anything like that, this mix is more leftfield, worldy, scratchy dub leaning electronic and afro funk obscurities that you or me do not own, do not know the titles of and will likely never find in a record shop. Philipp Demankowski from Dresden has never understood why so many DJs tend to use just one genre to make people dance. Since even the most innovative music is a melting pot of all of its influences in the end, an atmospheric DJ set can be diverse too. This approach is not only important for his mixes but also in Philipp’s radio show UV Funk on Dresden based community radio station coloRadio. Also, he's one of the heads behind Uncanny Valley and its sub labels Rat Life and shtum.

Everything started in 2006 as part of the DJ team The Moroders and with their wild Cosmic Dancer parties which were the first opportunity for Dresden’s Disco and House heads to see artists like Todd Terje, Tensnake, Mr Raoul K or Runaway. Club series like Still Going, an afterhour tribute to the sun, as well as the underground club night Sweat Box followed. Recently he established a Sunday dance called Balearic Sunday which turned out to be an awesome sunny party for everybody loving eclectic DJ-sets. Also, Philipp has played festivals like Nachtdigital and Melt! and most probably in one of your favorite clubs next door.
