Deep & Progressive Sensations #136 | In Harmony VI

Our guest today is Ghassan Hage, a professor of anthropology at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Today, we talk with Ghassan, not about Europe’s borders, but about Palestine, and the intensification of the destruction of life in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli state and the powers that support it.

We recorded our conversation a few weeks ago, in January 2024. As I record this introduction, I am struck by how difficult it is to find words that speak to the moment we are in. We are witnessing military attacks of unimaginable brutality, with countless bodies still to be found under the rubble. Alongside this obliteration of Palestinian life, we see the destruction of the conditions of possibility for life, with the bombing of water wells, tanks, greenhouses, food depots, ports, fishing boats, hospitals, schools, and bakeries. 

At the same time, as Ghassan points out, this violence is not new, but an intensification of the structural, settler colonial violence inflicted upon the Palestinians for the past 76 years and more. We must pause and reflect on the histories that made it possible for Gaza to become the place it is today, a place where Israel can cut off the supply of water, food and electricity to Gaza, turning hunger and thirst into weapons of war. As Ghassan points out, violence is inherent in the very existence of Gaza.

Where does the legitimacy of such violence come from? How do we accept living in a world where it is normalized?

Ghassan identifies the root of the problem as the virtual absence of the very thought of negotiating one’s existence with others, creating the fantasy in Israel that supremacy over everyone is possible. This fantasy is fueled by a frightening racism that makes it such that Palestinians can be treated as if their death is meaningless.

In the episode, Ghassan describes Israel as an ethno-racial state and as a meta-colony, a colonialism of all colonial powers. This means responsibility lies not only with the Israeli government but also with the meta-colonial powers that make this destruction possible, in the form of massive military aid and diplomatic support. And we must dig deeper, and think about the global infrastructures in place that provide the materials and cover necessary to sustain this onslaught and find ways to challenge it. 

We close the episode with a reflection on the future. Israel as an ethno-racial state, Ghassan asserts, is going to come to an end. The question is what kind of an end. Tragically, with massacres and counter-massacres? Or through a negotiated mode of existence where everyone can live together? Let us work towards the latter.

In the episode, we play a clip of Refaat Alareer, the writer, poet, professor, and activist, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike on the 6th of December 2023, along with several members of his family.

Refaat was a professor at the Islamic University of Gaza. He also co-founded the We Are Not Numbers project, which provided writing workshops for young Palestinians.

We close the episode with a recital of one of Refaat’s poems, titled, ‘If I must die, let it become a tale’. It became widely shared and recited at protests all over the world after he was killed. The recital we use is read by Peter Griffin and can be found here:

Miaux presents new LP ‘NEVER COMING BACK’ on VIERNULVIER Records.
The Belgian composer’s upcoming LP is inspired by the new film score she wrote for 60's cult film ‘CARNIVAL OF SOULS’.
Antwerp-based composer and synth virtuoso Miaux presents her new album, 'Never Coming Back’ on VIERNULVIER Records. The record is rooted in the recent film score she composed for the surreal and haunted cult movie 'Carnival of Souls' (1962).
Directed by American filmmaker Herk Harvey, this enigmatic ghost film influenced contemporary directors like David Lynch, George A. Romero, and Lucrecia Martel.
Miaux meticulously crafted the score in her home studio, relying solely on her two hands and a single synthesizer during the spring and summer of 2022. The inaugural performance of this renewed score with film, unfolded at Videodroom / Film Fest Gent 2022 in Ghent, Belgium. The compositions were subsequently unraveled, rewritten into full-fledged songs, and assembled into a new record entitled 'Never coming back ’, bearing Miaux’s unmistakable signature. The album is scheduled for release on May 3 and will be available on vinyl LP and all digital platforms.
Miaux will perform the album live at Roadburn Festival (NL), offering a pure interpretation of the new songs. Additionally, there are shows planned at STUK (Leuven) and Palmarium (Ghent), where she will perform the film score alongside the film.

An improv done the first day I had been testing the excellent Extension to my Easel, designed and built by Constantin Papageorgiadis who besides being expert in EMS Synthi + Buchla mythical instruments is a super nice man and musician...
The VCS3 Card expands the Music Easel or 208 with original EMS Synthi A and VCS3 circuits : 
An oscillator that produces simultaneous square and triangle waveshapes with wide range and features useful modifications (synchronization, shape CV, hi/lo range) +  a noise generator with variable colour. On top Constantin has added a Random voltage generator modification module that equips many original EMS Synthi A, AKS and VCS3, unlike the 208's one, it's true random. 
I made good use of it, hopefully for your pleasure...

Buchla - EMS Synthi VCS3

I like to be introduced as a "MUSICAL TRAVEL-AGENT".
ONSTAGE I'm mostly playing an Easel K (Buchla Modular Synth) and The Pipe (from SOMA Lab) which allows mouth-synthesis... I also manipulate unique vinyls with my sounds/musics, assaulting turntables to take advantage of the vinyl material to fondle released sounds, raking the needle across the record's grooves, rubbing their stylus on paper, cardboard, metal to process unusual noises and textures. I have a physical relation to my recordings and envision my live sets like performances. 
Gesture is also a very important part of my compositional process... While composing I am also relying on the use of real instruments such as Cymbalom, Pianos, Guitar and Percs that I play like a kid discovering a new toy, improvising and attaching great importance to gesture and stressing dynamics. My moves aren’t consensual, not cozying up potential listeners. A Punky approach even if throughout the past years I have been following courses of Composition + Electroacoustic Music at the Conservatory, specializing in Modular Synthesis. 
Pushing further my research in bringing together the Human and its Machine into a tapestry of sound which creates a deep sound assemblage of exotic Musiques Concrètes which guarantees to grow on you with repeated listens, slowly revealing its detailed richness…
