I Was Born, Then Burnt

There's a lot of work behind the scenes in Headphone Commute headquarters. All the email reading, promo sorting, and, of course, the listening and writing take up lots of time to make sure that I can bring you honest music on a regular basis. Sometimes, my "job" is mitigated through the trusted filter of a record label. After all, they invest more than just time into their supported artists. There are many such examples where I can turn to a favourite imprint and pretty much enjoy every single release. For many years now, since 2006 to be exact, I have been following the output of an Italian label founded by Alessandro Tedeschi, which he called Glacial Movements. As the name implies, the music put out by the imprint specializes in glacial and isolationist ambient soundscapes, "places that man has forgotten... icy landscapes... fields of flowers covered eternally with ice..." It's a beautiful place, and I have been a fan of the albums, including that of Tedeschi's own Netherworld project. Today, we're stepping away from these frozen territories of the inevitable future and instead take a look back at the ancestry of the past. In particular, the new album by Massimo Pupillo turns our attention towards the Indigenous people of the Arctic, who have been inhabiting some of these hospitable lands since the dawn of human civilization. The track I am premiering for you today, "Horagalles", is titled after the thunder god, often depicted with a sledgehammer in one hand and a cross-hammer in the other on the Sami shaman drums. It's a beautiful and slightly eerie piece, full of enigmatic worship, belief in the unknown, and of course, the distant rolls of thunder.

The EP is a testament to the artistic synergy between Logic Moon and Meierkord, who have meticulously blended their unique sounds to create something truly ethereal.

„A Forward-Facing Review“ is one of his works resulting from a one-year study period at „Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium“ in Copenhagen. In contrast to his previous work, Rumsch is responsible for both composition and sound design / mixing. Inspired by composers like Morton Feldman, Giacinto Scelsi and Elaine Radique and by the music of William Basinski, Tim Hecker, Brian Eno and Ben Frost, Rumsch draws up concepts to approach electro-acoustic music with pianistic elements. By only using acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments like piano, fender rhodes and various synthesizers, Rumsch first created the sounds for his composition in order to manipulate and edit them on the computer.

"A Forward-Facing Review" is a twenty-minute long concept composition with two parts exploring in two different ways a various amount of sounds as well as their gradual modulation. "Part II" is the more minimalistic chapter of this composition. An almost constant number of elements creates a sonic composition, which rests in itself. Thus development emerges through a gradual modulation of a few parameters. Philipp Rumsch invites the listener to accept subtle developments and offers the possibility to immerse into a difficile and diverse soundscape. 

Danish artists Anders Bach and August Rosenbaum as well as Icelandic composer, sound designer and multiinstrumentalist Valgeir Sigurðsson supported Rumsch in producing „A Forward-Facing Review“.

Relatives Schoensein is a non-profit art collaboration. The book shows photographs of excerpts of weathered and partly destroyed street art. For each photograph, there is a soundtrack created by a sound artist. All in all, there are over 40 sound artists from all over the world who have contributed to this project. Still Flowing

Philipp Rumsch, born in 1994, is a composer, pianist, and sound designer based in Leipzig, Germany. Between 2013 and 2020 Philipp Rumsch has studied jazz piano under the aegis of Michael Wollny and Richie Beirach at the Academy of Music and Theatre Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig. In 2016 and 2017 he has refined his sound design and composition capabilities at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with, among others, Niels-Lyhne Løkkegard, August Rosenbaum and Valgeir Sigurðsson.

Philipp is working both as a pianist, composer and arranger with artists, bands and ensembles from different genres. He has written music for theater and performances. His work is influenced by Avant-pop, electroacoustic, contemporary classical and improvised music. Philipp releases his music on the renowned record label Denovali. In 2018 he received the Leipzig award for young jazz musicians, funded by Marion Ermer foundation (Leipziger Jazznachwuchspreis der Marion-Ermer-Stiftung).
