Music for the BBC Horizon special - How to be an Astronaut


Star Gazing

This is a piece of music composed by myself and my good friend Billy Salvatori. This came about this past June when I was bored at home and playing around with some open tunings and one finger chords on guitar.  The result was something resembling psychedelic rock.

I'm hardly a guitarist, so this opened up whole new possibilities for me as a composer. So, armed with my one finger chords, a flute, and some virtual instruments, I set to work building up what is essentially a three part piece - the more metallic intro, the pastoral middle section, and the spacey final section which is meant to sound like you're drifting off to sea.

Billy and I collaborated on the rhythm part, while he developed the acoustic guitar parts and contributed the final solo at the end. I recorded and mixed everything and shaped the solo from several takes, using a variety of editing and post production techniques.

This is only the current version of the piece. Some additional recording and mixing with take place over the next few months.
