SOUNDS #30: The Hydrant - That's Not Alright

Hotel Death Star recently took the opportunity to remix the hit single ‘Truth or Dare’ by Jakarta based indie pop/ rock outfit ‘Dead Bachelors.’ 

Andreas Arianto initiated the idea as both a member of HDS and producer/co-writer for Dead Bachelors. Approaching the remix, HDS gave the track a complete makeover, pushing it into darker territory to align with their sound, while the upbeat R&B, pop style ‘Dead Bachelors’ vocals remain an integral hook throughout the song. 

Standing out is the slightly unorthodox outro, a haunting piano composition with classical roots, taking the listener through an emotional journey from anticipation and hope, to optimism and reward.

‘Truth or Dare’ is currently the highest spinning track for ‘Dead Bachelors’ with over 250,000 plays on Spotify alone. Recent years have seen them gather swift momentum and success with increased streaming, fans, radio play and live shows.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:
Forging the skills of singer-songwriter Phil Stoodley and composer-producer Andreas Arianto, this collab was spawned in the cold mountains of snow drenched Japan. Caught in a storm, Phil scratched out melodic beats in the room of a hotel that inhaled the weather, rather than protecting him from it.

Bringing the rough recordings back to his home in Bali, Phil teamed up with Andreas and together they shaped the new sounds into a writhing pulse of deep-house while keeping the grit of its birthplace firmly etched within its grinding drones and beats.
 
Their first single, ‘You’re Not Jesus’ found its title whilst kayaking with friends as the sun rose over the North Bali ocean.  As one friend swam off into the deep, another was caught on video screaming a warning ‘You’re not Jesus!’ The audio immortalized in Hotel Death Star’s first release, looped as a sample to mark the track’s chorus.

Modjorido belts out a solid wall of rock and roll, plastered together with energetic emotion. They hit the rooftop with a distorted punch and gave the sunset some extra bite with their track 'Rollercoaster'.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:
The second single, ‘That’s You’ is a sparse, upbeat deep-house track with dark overtones. Layered in melodic synthesizers and guitars, the track brings in a fresh asian flavour with the traditional Japanese Koto instrument, showcasing as one of the dominant melodies. Maybe Phil’s much time spent in Japan had something to do with that.

Influential flutters of Monolink, Bob Moses and ARTBAT make an impact on this duo's collaborative writing, along with a subtle salute to Pink Floyd, Andreas’s synth arpeggio pattern similar to a melody found made famous on the album ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. 

The middle breakdown performed by Andreas on piano would be suitably synced as an epic cinematic soundtrack. Its harmonic landscape created using a virtual instrument called ‘Death Piano,’ is reminiscent of romantic Russian composer Rachmaninoff.  Andreas’s memorable performance invokes a feeling of loss and loneliness before resolving with an upbeat resolution.

Lyrically, the lyrics are  Phil’s comical twist on passive aggressive/ narcissism. A “push me pull you” angle, you could say.

Hotel Death Star are currently composing and recording songs for their upcoming five track EP. Due for release in mid 2021.
