Philth and P-Fine - Tired

Two imprints from opposite sides of the Atlantic come together in 2015 in the name of 'BRSTL Hardcore' – the new, four-track EP from Brazilian-born, Bristol-based DnB producer, S.P.Y. Following a prolific year on his home label, Hospital Records, where he released his acclaimed double album totaling 24 tracks ('Back to Basics Chapters One and Two'), S.P.Y has collated four originals to be released via NEST.

S.P.Y (real name Carlos Lima) explored a darker, edgier sound in Back to Basics last year, reflecting on the early days of Drum & Bass in a noble nod to the old school. And while 'BRSTL Hardcore' carries on some of the redolence of the 90s sound found in the double album, the EP’s main attributes lie within the energy of the production, with S.P.Y concentrating on maximum bass levels aimed directly at the dancefloor. From the snarling punches in “BRSTL Hardcore” to the dramatic atmospherics of “Mass Effect”, the new EP from S.P.Y boasts a gritty, stripped back aesthetic that both DnB newcomers and longtime Hospital Records fans can equally appreciate.

"You see in this mix, I tried to just get all the aspects and variety that I love about drum and bass and jungle. Usually I like to do a journey going through from liquid ending with hard clashy amens and dark bass's, but I knew for Chase and Status I had to go in from start to finish. I did it in one take to try keep it all as natural as it would be if you seen me live indi dance.

The mix features my LP tracks rolled out with some of my favourite tunes from 2019, but mostly my favourite tunes ever, the music that inspired me to become an artist and has shaped my tastes in the twenty years since I first started collecting vinyl. Next up on Bristol’s Born On Road Records comes a three-way collaboration of epic proportions. Having impressed with his outstanding label debut, the Hand Sign EP, earlier this month, Gillingham native DJ Gaw swiftly returns to the imprint, teaming up with long-standing Born On Road affiliate Selecta J-Man – who topped the Juno Download singles chart in July with “My Style” – for the infectious “Rum & Lime”. The pair are joined on the track by Bristolian drum and bass soulstress A Little Sound, the 21-year-old singer and TikTok sensation whose recent collaboration with Kanine, “Back in Time”, has already amassed over two million streams. 

Originally kept under lock and key as a dubplate special but now seeing a release due to great demand, “Rum & Lime” finds A Little Sound heavily interpolating Lily Allen’s world-renowned 2006 debut “Smile”, retaining Allen’s melodies but rewriting the lyrics with a summery and suitably rave-centric twist. Mostly staying true to the original track’s rocksteady sound, Gaw and J-Man intersperse the iconic ska strokes with stonking jump-up drops to make for a festival- ready anthem, bound to serve as the perfect soundtrack to this summer’s outdoor gatherings. 

Having teased the track via both TikTok and the label’s Goat Shed radio takeover last month, initial fan reactions certainly bode well for the future of this track. Expect to hear much more of it in the coming months, and keep an eye out for plenty more releases from the Born On Road family later this year.

Philth : Drum & Bass from the deep end.

Since releasing his 100th track in 2017 Philth said he stopped counting, but the prolific artist has shown no sign of slowing down and continues to release music which reaches across the drum & bass scene, from smooth sultry grooves to tweaked-out tech stompers. The array of labels Philth has released on demonstrates his versatile sound: crew-status at Dispatch & Integral; tracks for scene stalwarts Spearhead, CIA, Playaz, Renegade Hardware, Chronic & Fokus; and regular appearances on next-gen imprints Flexout, Lifestyle and Peer Pressure.

The last few years have seen a stream of collaborative projects, including the chart-topping ‘Babylon Sound’ EP with Bredren, deep soul voyages with Phil Tangent as Phil:osophy and the ribcage crushing ‘Heimlich EP’ with long-term associate Wreckless. Connections with MC Fats, Collette Warren, Sense MC and Becca Jane Grey have affirmed his deft touch with vocals and ability to bring emotive songs to the dancefloor, demonstrating his versatility while maintaining consistency across his steady output.

But all the while he has been cherry-picking his favourites and hoarding a vast body of work, now ready to be unleashed as his debut album on Dispatch Recordings. ‘Moments in Time’ is made up of two LP’s of music, and displays the full range of the Philth sound while exploring new depths of emotion and ambient soundtrack-inspired works. Some of the usual suspects are called in for collaborations and vocal features, but there is a deeply personal streak running through the album with soul-searching vocals alongside the powerful basslines. Supported on dub by Goldie and road-tested by Philth & Ant TC1 over the last year, ‘Moments in Time’ can be now heard in the sets of long-time supporters Bailey, Marky, Randall, Artificial Intelligence and the extended Dispatch family.
