Composed for the synthesis show with Joanne Dramko.

A silly reference to Satie, and his concept of "musique d’ameublement" (furniture music). But in actuality it could be considered more of an experiment in spastic counterpoint for an impossible "double-decker" piano.  I recorded a single phrase (the opening) and added an accompanying left hand. I then copy/pasted the parts while changing a few of the settings, octave, delay by an 1/8 note, etc.  The resulting  emergent harmonies were the result of the chance alignments, tempered with my editing.  This could not be played in real life by a single pianist, given the mashing of notes in the same ranges.

Remixed for the synthesis gallery installation with Joanne Dramko.

Inspired by a performance of Everything Ends Here by Don Buchla and Alessandro Cortini at the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival in 2010. This piece was my first attempt to deliberately slow down the tempo way past my comfort level, playing behind my instincts rather than in front of them. I have paired this with Joanne's painting Breathe.

"Pale Blue Dot" refers to the last image taken by the Voyager probe as it left the solar system and turned to face Earth:  a single pixel, suspended like a dust speck in a sunbeam.  Sagan's crusade to have NASA take such a "frivolous" image with a scientific instrument and his poetic response was the inspiration for this piece: 

"Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
